Police arrive at a mansion and find a man exiting. The man ignores the police warnings and runs, but trips, allowing the police to catch him and discover that it's Mike Axford of the Daily Sentinel.
Later, in Britt Reid's office at the Sentinel, D.A. Scanlon informs Britt that the butler at the mansion has died and murder is being added to the charges against Mike. Scanlon and the police believe Mike performed a series of interviews with wealthy mansion owners in order to case their homes. Britt isn't so sure and goes to the city jail to question Mike, who tells Britt that the only other person who had the same access to the homes as him was his photographer, Ardis Ralston, whom Mike has known since she was a child.
Through a bug, Green Hornet and Kato are led to Yale Barton, who is Ardis's boyfriend. After knocking out Green Hornet, Barton is confronted by Ardis, who threatens to go to the police about everything. Before she can, Barton grabs her and forces her onto his cargo plane. Green Hornet is freed by Kato and they use Black Beauty's smokescreen to prevent the plane from taking off and leave Barton and his thugs for the police. Thanks to Ardis, Mike is freed from jail.
