a grim surprise- billy wants grim to help with a surprise party for mandy. grim reluctantly agrees, only to discover in the end that it isn't even mandy's birthday, meaning everything they did was for nothing.

beast and barbarians- grim zaps billy and irwin into a video game to cure their addiction. What will happen when they get in? Will they be able to escape?

good episodes, a grim surprise was better but beast and barbarians had its moments too. neither was fantastic but had their moments, and so my grade is a high "B", it was great but not too greatmoreless
  • Billy and Grim plan a surprise birthday party for Mandy, then the gang enters a fantasy world to break Billy and Irwin's video game addiction.

    9.3
'A Grim Surprise' has a rather unusual plotline--Grim and Billy working together to do something nice for Mandy. Not something you normally see on the show. In this episode Billy convinces the reaper to help him make a cake for Mandy's supposed surprise birthday party. Though unenthusiastic at first, Grim slowly becomes just as excited about the event as his idiot friend (the reaper's heart even grows a few sizes in a nice Grinch allusion). However, by the end it turns out it wasn't Mandy's birthday at all, and Grim is left wondering why he ever trusted Billy in the first place.

'Beast and Barbarians' is an even better episode. It's one of those Billy, Mandy, Grim, and Irwin type adventures, which I've always liked. This time around it's a Dungeons and Dragons inspired setting filled with an assortment of monsters and traps that Grim and Mandy hope will break the two boys obsession with a particular fantasy video game. The highlight is probably Mandy meeting and 'bargaining' with a Gollum-like creature for a special ring of power...and Irwin getting left behind at the end.

Both episodes are shining examples of excellence in a series that is already pretty shiny to begin with. :)moreless
  • Pretty good

    9.1
A Grim Surpries and Beast and Barbians were two pretty good episodes. Funny, of course. And some great parodies. In my opinion, I would say I'd like Beast and Barbarians better for some reason, it just kind of got my attention. Go Nerds who like video games! And that's not you, Irwin.
  • I sometimes tape this episode just because of one thing.

I sometimes tape this episode just because of one thing....

That would be Mandy and the ring. This is yet another 'Well, it had its moments' episode.

The whole cake/cannibalism thing was pretty funny too. I always am reminded of the scene in another episode where Mandy is a table in a play when I see this episode...

  • QUOTES (3)

    • Grim: Billy, there is one thing I whoop up real big, and it ISN'T birthday parties.
Billy: Aw, why not?! We'll have balloons and cake and candy...(he continues going on about the party planning)
Grim : That's enough! (heading out the door in disgust) I hate parties. What a STUPID idea!! (Billy eventually has an emotional breakdown, bursting into tears)
Billy : (wailing) I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU WON'T PARTY WITH ME!!! (sighs as he continues crying) Oh, well...I guess we'll do something else together.
      Grim: (relieved) Yes! Something else.
Billy: (sniffling) Mom said it was time to clean my ears out......(Grim suddenly shudders at the thought as a spoon picks our a big blob of wax from his ear and drops into a cup)
      Grim: Uugh!
Billy: That could be fun, huh? My ears are so backed up I can't see straight!
Grim: (giving up) FORGET IT! We'll throw your stupid party..!

    • Irwin: Spellcaster, I said...and what do I get? A stupid book. And could they make it any BIGGER!?
      (the book grows bigger)
      Irwin: Wait...I was just kidding!

    • Ring Keeper: What's black and blue and red all over?
Mandy: That would be you if you don't hand over that ring pronto.

  • NOTES (3)

  • ALLUSIONS (3)

    • Episode Title: Beasts and Barbarians

This is a reference to the Beast and the Harlot.

    • Episode Title: Beasts and Barbarians

This is a reference to the game Dungeons and Dragons.

    • Creature in cave:

When Mandy falls in the cave, the creature is very similar to the creature Smeagol/Gollum in the Lord Of The Rings trilogies. The creature said it will give Mandy a magic ring if she answered his riddles. Smeagol/Gollum did this to Bilbo in "The Hobbit."
