  • A Classic Episode of the Series.

    9.5
"The Last Laugh" was a really great episode. The writing was good, the story was one that allowed you to get right down into it, and it was really nice to see the famous brothers and their sister from the Stratemeyer Syndicate in an episode together. This is not the first time that the title "The Last Laugh" has been used in conjuction with the Hardy Boys. The title was used as the title for the Hardy Boys Casefiles novel #42 in August of 1990, but that story involved a comic convention. This "Last Laugh" had more in common with the Hardy Boys novel "The Melted Coins" in that the Hardys have to find some French printing plates that were stolen from the government vaults in France, because the plates are used to print paper currency in France. I just had to laugh when I heard Nancy's last line in the episode, when she says that she's glad she an only child. True, in the Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys and Tom Swift universe, Nancy is an only child to Carson Drew, however, in the real universe, Nancy Drew was the last literary child to Edward Stratemeyer.

It is so nice that this episode has been released on DVD in Canada, since it is the only place that most people can see this great series, even though it did air on YTV-East from Monday to Thursday nights in the Summer of 2006. Unfortunately, for American viewers, the DVD set was a Canadian release only, so it is only available through Canadian websites, and it is English only with no subtitles (you can't even have your TV display the subtitles, since there is no subtitle information anywhere on these discs).

I gave this episode a 9.5 only because it was way too short. I can see why the series didn't make it for a second season; half-an-hour is way to short to write a proper mystery. You just can't get that complicated of a plot into a half-hour episode.moreless
  • I chose Nerve-wracking for this episode simply because of how nerve-wracking it is for me to see things about this show, and not be able to find it anywhere!

Does this show ever air anymore? That question constantly runs through my head. I am an avid fan of the Hardy Boys book series, and it would make me absolutely giddy if I could find a place to watch it.

This episode sounds very intriguing, and I would give a real review if I could ever watch it. If anyone--anyone at all--knows if the show is on DVD or if it stil airs, please let me know, and I promise you--the posts from me will come flying in!moreless
