Episode Summary

Fortune is on the side of Arthur and Ford: their new ship's transporter is still working, but it needs someone to operate it manually. Marvin is therefore pressed into volunteering to sacrifice himself so that the rest of the group can escape. Arthur and Ford are separated from Zaphod and Trillian and find themselves on board a space ship which is about to crash-land into the prehistoric past of a planet which the two of them find strangely familiar. If this is indeed Earth, then history as we know it is about to be changed... and so is the Ultimate Question to Life, the Universe and Everything.moreless

      • In the Golgafrincham ship sequence, about one minute and fifty-three seconds after Ford is given his jynnan tonnyx by Number Three, its colour changes from yellow to red. The drinking glass the drink is in changes from translucent to transparent about thirty-seven seconds after the colour change. Edit
      • The 'B' Ark Captain's three-year bath reflects Douglas Adams's own work habits. Associate producer of The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy John Lloyd has said "I think his works should be measured in baths. This took 150,000 baths to write." Edit

      • Number One: But, sir, they're my prisoners. Can't I just interrogate them a little bit? B-Ark captain: Oh, very well. Ask them what they want to drink. Number One: Thank you, sir. All right, you scum, you vermin... B-Ark captain: Steady on, Number One. Number One: What do you want to drink? Ford Prefect: Well, gin and tonic sounds very nice to me. Arthur? Arthur Dent: Huh? Yes. Number One: With ice or without? Ford Prefect: With, please. Number One: Lemon? Ford Prefect: Yeah. And do you have any of those little biscuits? You know, the cheesy ones? Number One: I'm asking the questions. Edit
      • (a pair of nuclear missiles approach) Zaphod Beeblebrox: This is terrific! They're trying to kill us! You know what that means? Arthur Dent: Yes, we're going to die. Edit
      • Arthur Dent: I'm trying to teach the cavemen to play Scrabble. It's uphill work. The only word they know is "unh", and they don't know how to spell it. Edit
