  • After finding his friend Ruth hanged, Freddie becomes convinced that her death is connected with that of Peter Darrell - and with the mysterious Mr. Kish.

The central figure in this series, played by Romola Garai, is allegedly based on the formidable Grace Wyndham Goldie, a legendary figure in the BBC's News Department, and "The Hour" bears some resemblance to both "In The News", a one-hour news programme she started in 1950, and to "Panorama", which Goldie is generally credited with revitalising after its shaky start in 1953. Of course, the real Goldie was in her fifties in 1956, with fifteen years of TV experience; she would also seem to have projected rather less fragility and nervousness than this fictionalised counterpart. Abi Morgan's script continues to push 21st-century buttons in a predictable manner, and, given how it wears its feminism on its sleeve, it really doesn't help Romola Garai to dominate the proceedings as she surely should. Instead, the emphasis is on her chip-on-the-shoulder colleague Freddie Lyon, a tiresome character made more irritating by Ben Whishaw's performance.moreless
