  • With the Suez Crisis finally on, Freddie Lyon is politely threatened by McCain, and then nearly murdered by Kish.

The alternative-universe unreality of Abi Morgan's script continues to keep this drama much less interesting than it ought to be. Whenever Morgan puts in a period reference, she gets it wrong - for example, the bizarre moment in Episode Two where Romola Garai's heroine is told she looks just like Carole Lesley. (Carole Lesley was a British movie starlet who died forgotten in 1974 - she didn't look much like Ms. Garai, actually.) Or, in this episode, the elaborate but redundant scene of country gentry shooting away at birds - an unlikely setting for a BBC anchor-man, surely, but maybe Ms. Morgan thinks that's what posh people did in those days. The assassin Kish proves quite remarkably inefficient when he tries to kill Freddie Lyon, and their "life-and-death" struggle is utterly unbelievable. With Anna Chancellor having less and less to do and Juliet Stevenson and Tim Pigott-Smith seemingly vanished from the proceedings, one begins to feel queasy about this show's future.moreless
