  • Public anger against the Suez crisis leads to violence in the streets and Freddie begins to get to the heart of the Ruth Elms murder case.

This episode has slightly less of a never-never-land feel to it than its predecessors, if only because there is more use of period news footage, with Sir Anthony Eden, Hugh Gaitskell and Aneurin Bevan all turning up on TV screens to clarify the political issues. This is just as well, for the fictional storyline continues to be fairly dull and predictable. Oona Chaplin struggles to make something of her impossible part as Hector's ditsy upper-class wife and Juliet Stevenson is still given nothing worth doing to do as the ambiguous Lady Elms. Still, the tough-minded worldliness of Anna Chancellor's Lix continues to be a tonic and Tim Pigott-Smith makes the most of the episode's climactic scene, which hints that even boring Freddie Lyon knows more about the plot than we have supposed.moreless
