Scriptwriter Abi Morgan has been most put out at the widespread claims that her series is historically inaccurate - she's a writer, she says, she uses her imagination. Well, maybe, but it's not her imagination that's under discussion, it's her research skill, which seems to be close to nonexistent. And is she so imaginative? The villain of the piece turns out to be the very fellow who asked Freddie if he'd told anyone else about his suspicions. And he's an old-fashioned between-the-wars left-wing intellectual, too! Yeah, really imaginative. It's a surprise to find the BBC doing, in 1956, a satirical sketch of the sort that "That Was The Week That Was" introduced over six years later, whilst the aforesaid bad guy is referred to as a "mole" - not a real-life espionage term at the time, but an invention of John Le Carre's (dating from the 1970s) which, to the author's well-known delight, entered popular speech after "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" was televised in 1979. Once you get past all this nonsense, the episode is actually rather effective, with more terrific work from Anna Chancellor and Anton Lesser (the latter's big scene was the best thing in the whole series); Oona Chaplin and Tim Pigott-Smith also get, finally, decent chances to show their talent. Juliet Stevenson, alas, is still wasted.moreless
