The second episode of Season Two picks up a bit, with underworld forces seemingly in league with the devious Angus McCain to obliterate Hector Madden's career (and thus smash the influence of "The Hour"?), and romance in the air as Bel enters upon a bantering relationship with her opposite number at ITV. Viewers with long memories will recall that the ITV version of "Panorama" was a long-running show called "This Week", which had a lot more gravitas (or, some might say, stodginess) than "Undercover", the invented ITV news show of this series. "Undercover" seems intended to remind us of "World In Action", the brilliant ITV news documentary series which didn't start until about a decade after the time-period of "The Hour". Just to confuse things still further, Hector Madden, whose alarming downward spiral into serial adultery, secret vice and alcoholism is clearly going to be the spine of this new season, seems quite unlike any BBC news presenter of the 1950s (such things would never have been tolerated in the old BBC!) but may seem to some to be reminiscent of an ITV newsreader, Reginald Bosanquet - whose actual excesses, notorious in the 1980s, extended no further, let us stress, than a rather noticeable tendency towards heavy drinking.moreless

    • Although the fascist organization featured in this episode is referred to by a fictitious name, it is clearly meant to represent the British Union Of Fascists, which, under the leadership of Sir Oswald Mosley, had been very active in the 1930s. Curiously, Hector Madden refers to the leader of the organization as "Mr. Mosley", although he was a baronet.
