Well, well, well, so Mrs. Pierce is a conniving, manipulative madam. What makes me uncomfortable is that Sebastian doesn't make that transition from callous villain to victim with ease. Ok, he had a mother who would lie (no pun intended) to make a quick shilling, but I still don't feel sorry for him. Unfortunately, Evie views the situation with her typical doe eyed innocents. Is he that attractive? One thing he does do is develop Evie's independence and introduces her to the concept of frivolous fun. I like the way Evie's character becomes emboldened in this episode. Not only does she go AWOL but her decision to return smarmy Arthur's ring and reject his marriage proposal without having to ask Bea or Penny first is quite refreshing. The scene where she does decline his offer is an excellent combination of the 'old' and 'new' Evie. Louise Lombard plays the part so well. I think the portrayal of Daphne's steady decline from nightclub diva to oblivious addict is really well done too. I actually feel sorry for her. I think despite all her social advantages, she too feels stifled in the world she's expected to live in. It's perhaps no wonder that Arthur is involved with The 25 Club if all he has to do on New Year's eve is attend one of his mother's formal recital evenings, I'm just surprised he's not taken the same route out that Daphne has. I enjoyed watching him make his sharp exit. Let's face it, who could blame him? Poor Piggy, it's such a shame. Being turned down by Bea, going bankrupt, he's not exactly lucky is he? She did make the right decision though. But as Piggy exits, the question we all ask ourselves is will Beatrice ever laugh out loud again? I was pleased to see Tilly taking more of the limelight too. Thank heavens for those haircuts, at least they can now wear a stylish cloche hat with confidence. What the world of difference getting a telephone makes. Classic episode.

    • This episode takes place at Christmas/New Year 1920 / 1921. Edit
    • When Evie and Penny leave the cinema, there is a poster promoting 'The Sheik' starring Rudolph Valetino. The film was released in 1921, but New Year celebrations to mark the end of 1920 don't even take place later in this episode. Early film promotion or contextual error? Edit
    • When Bea is getting ready to go out with Piggy, she puts one earing in. When she goes to open the door to Daphne she has two earings in. But when she follows Daphne in to the lounge the second earing is gone. Edit
