  • Dark and atypical. But an outstanding episode.

    9.5
By this point in the series, episodes of The Incredible Hulk were typically mediocre and formulaic, punctuated by several outstanding episodes such as "The Psychic" and "Prometheus."

"Deathmask" not only is an outstanding episode, it is atypical in the series for its subject matter and unrelenting dark mood. John McPherson's direction and producer Nicholas Corea's script were both personal bests for the series. As usual, Bill Bixby's pitch perfect portrayal of Banner is a highlight. His interaction with habitual "Hulk" guest star Gerald McRaney (making his fourth and final guest shot in the series) during the interrogation scenes are outstanding for the show and any other drama series at the time. Minor quibbles we have are the killer's rather predictable motivation ("daddy issues") and the exaggerated mob mentality of the townspeople. In addition, after having been identified by the FBI in the preceding episode ("A Rock and Hard Place"), we can only imagine the dramatic interplay that would have ensued had McRaney's character been the one to actually discover David's true identity. Nevertheless, it's an excellent episode and an unusual break from the family-friendly themes that were the series' norm throughout its five year run.moreless
