Flowers for Hobbes
Hobbes and Darien are on the trail of a sperm thief. A college professor is using the sperm to isolate intelligence-causing genes, and put them into a retrovirus. Hobbes is accidentally infected and soon begins to become more and more intelligent. But the partners discover that the gene therapy is lethal. Bobby becomes smart enough to create a cure...but refuses to do so, preferring to die smart then live dumb. Darien infects himself, leaving Hobbes no choice but to come up with a cure to save his friend.moreless

  • A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

    My second favourite I-man episode.

Why did I love this show? Because of the actors. You never know where talent might be hiding. And sometimes it hides in the weirdest damn places. In a way I was just as bothered and bewildered as Darien witnessing his friend get all smart all of the sudden, upon seeing the character of Bobby Hobbes reaching new leves of depth. For a second we get to look straight into his psyche:

    "Nobody here takes me seriously.'

No, Bobby. Most of the time they don't, but it's not like you act like the sharpest tool in the shed either! Hobbes is a great character either way and the actor delivered a great performance. The highlight of the episode was the stand off, and that's when Vincent Ventresca and Paul Ben Victor played great off each other. There was a real conection there, between two good friends and I get the willies everytime I see Hobbes' look just as he gets ready to say the magic formula or whatever it is. There is such a conflict in him and he plays it so well.

    Man, he's all heart!

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • At 35:29 Darien tells Bobby that the other four test subjects were gone. But there were only three remaining subjects.

    • Bobby slams invisible Darien onto the table, causing the glass top to shatter. Yet none of the items on the table even moved, when Darien would have hit them before hitting the glass.

  • QUOTES (4)

    • Bobby: Hey, man, you know what? Screw Menzo.
      Darien: It's Mensa.
Bobby: Whatever. Elitists! Intelligence is experience. It's about effort, okay? Thomas Edison said, "Genius is one percent inspiration and 99% perspiration."
Darien: And you got the BO to prove it.

    • Darien: A brooding German guy named Schopenhauer said that with increased intelligence comes an increased capacity for pain. So, I guess if ignorance is bliss, then enlightenment is pure hell.

    • (to Dr. Wasser)
Bobby: Doc, (clears throat) a guy comes in, wins the Nobel Prize, you say, "Congrats, here's a cup, there's a room, go in there and..." You know... (chuckles) You know, you know... "Do what you gotta do," right?

    • (talking to a super-intelligent Hobbes)
Darien: You're superman? I'm the invisible man. Wow, we just get Wonder Woman, we could really party, you know what I'm saying?
