The Irish R.M. was based on the stories by Somerville and Ross and tells of the adventures of the monocled Major Sinclair Yeates (played by Peter Bowles) as an English army officer who resigns his commission and becomes the Resident Magistrate in a rural Ireland village at the end of the nineteenth century. He finds himself living in a ramshackle old manor house surrounded by the colourful and eccentric inhabitants of the district...
