Nightbeat Takeoff
AIRED:
With the new season, Jack is preparing to do the series on a weekly basis. His publicity agent has hired trucks to run over people leaving a tire imprint that says "Watch Jack Benny every week". Canceling out on a golf game at the country club, Jack overhears George Burns, Robert Wagner and Tony Curtis questioning whether he has the stamina for a weekly program. Suddenly feeling tired, Jack goes home and takes a nap. He has a nightmare where he's grilled by Mike Wallace on his Nightbeat program about deciding to go weekly. Benny squirms under the questioning.moreless

    • QUOTES (1)

      • Jack: Why shouldn't I do a TV show every week? I make millions of people laugh.
Mike Wallace: Let's talk about your TV show. We'll get to your violin playing later.

    • NOTES (3)

      • Mary Livingstone was highly promoted as coming out of retirement to appear in this episode, but her stage fright put an end to that idea. Jack even offered to tape the dress rehearsal so she wouldn't have to face a live audience, but that didn't calm her nerves. Benny told the press, "I needed a scene in which someone would scold me for going on TV every week, and Mary was the only one who could do it...But I could see she was getting more and more nervous as the show got closer. So we rewrote her part rather than subject her to the strain. She gets nervous, even without the audience."

      • Nightbeat was a late-night interview program hosted by Mike Wallace on New York TV station WABD. It aired live Tuesdays through Fridays from 11PM-Midnight. In the typically direct Wallace style, he asked probing questions of guests on a setting of just a black background. It aired 10/9/1956-5/31/1957. Wallace was picked up by ABC for national airing of a half-hour version of the series titled Mike Wallace Interviews. This ran 4/28/1957-4/19/1958.

      • This begins The Jack Benny Program's first season as a weekly series.
