  • Jeff's TV life in a nutshell

    6.6
This episode introduces us to Jeff Foxworthy's TV life. We meet wife Karen, son Matt, the inlaws Elliot and Victoria and Jeff's coworkers Russ and Walt. This episode centers on Jeff paying his father-in-law back for a loan only to run into unforseen expenses when his son Matt is accepted into a gifted program at school. the plot and characters are simple yet in a way realistic. Most men out there will admit that their in-laws don't think much of them and are constantly trying to look good in their eyes if only for the person they are married to. I've been there so I know what that's like. I can relate to Jeff. It's hard being the odd man out. At the beginning of this episode Jeff does a few redneck jokes and does little bits of his act throughout the show. Also seen are Karen's friend Sandi and I guess so Jeff could have someone to play off of nervous yuppie neighbor Craig. It was a decent effort. There's not a whole lot there but it does make for safe family viewing.moreless
  • A strong opening for a good show.

    9.0
This was a good intro to a very funny series. Unlike other shows, they really don't need a lot of character developement, since it is largely based on Jeff's stand up routines. The advantage is that there is plenty of material. On the other hand Foxworthy fans realize when he goes into large sections of his stand up routine. I think they needed to have some "You might be a redneck..." jokes in the first episode, though. This helps people get into the feel of the thing.

The remaining cast members are introduced, most of them are not that exciting, with his co-worker Walt (Matt Clark) being interesting and Haley Joel Osment as Jeff's son Matt being the best of the non Jeff performers.

Because it's Foxworthy, you want to come back for more.moreless

    • Jeff: Karen don't you see? I can strike a blow for every dufus who's ever borrowed money from his father-in-law.

    • Jeff: Hey Buddy; Mom says you have a question. (Takes a deep breath) When a man and a woman fall in love--
Matt: (interrupts) No, not that question. A kid called me a name today. What's a redneck?
Jeff: When two cousins fall in love…

    • Matt: I don't want a new baby brother or sister.
Karen: Oh, honey, your dad and I will always love you just as much as we do right now.
Jeff: Think this out, Matt. If it's a girl, you get to help me wrap the entire house with barbed wire when she's sixteen.
      Matt: Cool.
Jeff: And if it's a boy, you have somebody to tease and tourture without ever leaving the comfort of your home.
      Matt: I hope it's a boy.
      Karen: I hope it's a girl.
      Jeff: I hope it's mine.
