A The Knick Community
Friday 10:00 PM on Cinemax

Cinemax has shed its image as a home for late-night raunch-fests filled with boobs and grown into a network full of original programming filled with action and boobs. But its upcoming series The Knick, one of our most-anticipated series of the summer, looks poised to springboard the network into the realm of its sister channel, HBO. And it may even sneak some boobs in, too (artfully, of course).

From director Steven Soderbergh—who's one of my favorite "auteurs," as they're often called—and starring Clive Owen (Children of Men), The Knick follows the rise of medicine in the early 1900s, when bloody hack jobs were evolving into bloody proto-surgery. Expect plenty of Soderbergh's mastery of light, editing, and fly-on-the-wall camerawork and plenty of Clive Owen's awesome mustache.

Soderbergh is set to direct all 10 episodes of The Kinck's first season, so obviously I'm going to watch this until my eyes fall out. I can't wait.

The Knick premieres August 8 at 10pm on Cinemax.

It won't be an easy watch, but looks interesting, something like "Casualty 1900". A 2006 BBC Show

Clive Owen's moustache will make moustaches awesome again just like Tim Olyphant's hat did for hats (or at least those stetson hats). Still the combo of medical (surgery esp) drama and period doesn't make this too appealing for me... Likely to check out the pilot though since there is such positive buzz....

I know this looks so good, and I'm a fan of both Soderbergh (mostly) and Owen, but I'm not entirely sure I'm going to be able to watch. I don't mind gore. Hannibal's one of my favorite shows right now. But I often find surgery really hard to stomach, particularly early turn-of-the-century hospital butchery with their questionable anesthetics, massive hypodermic needles, and glass chemistry bottles. Ugh!

The "Kinck"? (last paragraph)

That score alone, brilliant and so eerie. I just hope the show doesn't go the hammy, over-indulgent American Horror Story route.

I will watch this just for Steven Soderbergh's directing.

Clive Owen usually manages to be engaging even where scripts/directors fail him. Soderbergh has a story of real substance to open both his and the viewers senses wide open. This pairing has to be a must-see offering beyond the usual conditional 3 episode rule. I'm also assuming supper may be a bad idea with this for some.

Sodergergh is one of the most uneven directors in Hollywood. You never know if you are going to get something deep and thoughtful or shallow and vapid. None the less, I'll be checking this out.
