  • Pam Grier

    Kit Porter

    8.6
The reigning queen of the 1970s blaxploitation genre, Pam Grier was born May 26, 1949, in Winston-Salem, NC. An Air Force mechanic's daughter, she was raised on military bases in England and Germany. During her teen years the family settled in Denver, CO, where at the age of 18, Grier entered the Miss Colorado Universe pageant. Named first runner-up, she attracted the attention of Hollywood agent David Baumgarten, who signed her to a contract. After relocating to Los Angeles, Grier struggled to mount an acting career, and worked as a switchboard operator at the studios of Roger Corman's American International Pictures. Finally, with Corman's aid, she made her film debut in the 1970 Russ Meyer cult classic Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, followed by an appearance in Jack Hill's 1971 cheapie The Big Doll House. For several years, Grier languished virtually unnoticed in grindhouse fare like 1971's Women in Cages and 1973's Arena (aka Naked Warriors) before winning the title role in Hill's 1973 action outing Coffy. Playing a nurse seeking vengeance against the drug dealers responsible for her sister's descent into heroin addiction, Grier immediately rose to the forefront of the so-called "blaxploitation" genre, a group of action-adventure films aimed squarely at African-American audiences. Portraying the 1974 superheroine Foxy Brown, she became a major cult figure, as her character's fierce independence, no-nonsense attitude, and empowered spirit made her a role model for blacks and feminists alike. At the peak of her popularity, Grier even appeared on the covers of Ms. and New York magazines. Her films' often racy content also made her a sex symbol, and additionally she posed nude for the men's magazine Players. Successive action roles as gumshoe Sheba Shayne in 1975's Sheba, Baby and as the titular reporter Friday Foster further elevated Grier's visibility, but fearing continued typecasting she shifted gears to star opposite Richard Pryor in the fact-based 1977 auto-racing drama Greased Lightning. She did not reappear onscreen for four years, resurfacing to acclaim in 1981 as a murderous prostitute in Fort Apache, the Bronx; however, no other major roles were forthcoming, and she spent much of the decade appearing on television and in straight-to-cable features. A major role in the 1988 Steven Seagal action hit Above the Law marked the beginning of a comeback, and after appearing in 1993's Posse, Grier starred with fellow blaxploitation vets Jim Brown, Richard Roundtree, and Fred "the Hammer" Williamson in 1996's Original Gangstas, a throwback to the films of the early '70s. In 1997, the actress' career resurgence was complete with the title role in Jackie Brown, written in her honor by director and longtime fan Quentin Tarantino. Grier's tough, sexy portrayal of a jaded flight attendant earned praise from critics far and wide, as well as the promise of steady work. She could subsequently be seen in films ranging from the indie comedy Jawbreaker (1999), in which she had a supporting role as a detective, to Jane Campion's Holy Smoke (1999), which cast her as the girlfriend and assistant of deprogrammer Harvey Keitel, to Bones (2000), a horror film that saw Grier playing the girlfriend of a murdered man (Snoop Dogg) who comes back from the dead to wreak vengeance on his killers. ~moreless

  • Jennifer Beals

    Bette Porter

    9.3
A thin, naturally attractive brunette with a personable smile and the brains to match her beauty, actress Jennifer Beals was virtually propelled to overnight stardom and fashion icon status with her energetic performance in director Adrian Lyne's 1983 dance drama Flashdance. Though her career would suffer a slight setback when it was revealed that Beals didn't perform all of her own dance moves in the sleeper hit, the talented actress would endure to make something of a comeback in the late '90s. A Chicago native who was traveling in Europe when her publicist called her for a New York audition that the filmmakers were pitching as a "female Saturday Night Fever," Beals booked the first flight back to the states and, despite the presence of thousands of other eager young actresses, somehow managed to stand out from the crowd to impress producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. Beals' only other film work to that point was as an extra in 1980's My Bodyguard, so it was quite a gamble to cast a virtual unknown in the lead. This was especially true, given that, days before the film's premiere, Paramount Pictures sold off 25 percent of the film; however, the gamble paid off and Flashdance became nothing less than a cultural phenomenon. With ripped, oversized sweaters adorning teenage girls nationwide, it seemed as if Beals had the cinematic world at her fingertips -- and then the bottom dropped out. When it was later revealed that Beals impressive moves weren't entirely her own, audiences felt betrayed (as if action stars really do all of their own stunts) and subsequently protested the burgeoning actress without taking into consideration that she was the dramatic core of the film. Opting to continue her education at Yale immediately following Flashdance's production, roles in such efforts as The Bride (1985) and Split Decisions (1988) were squeezed in during Beals' summer breaks. Though neither effort did much to forward Beals' career, the actress would continue to appear in such quirky, low-budget efforts as Vampire's Kiss (1989) and Blood and Concrete (1991) moving into the 1990s. Beals was married to director Alexandre Rockwell in 1986, and in 1992 she would appear opposite Steve Buscemi and Seymour Cassel in Rockwell's comedy drama In the Soup. If the majority of the 1990s found Beals relegated to mostly unseen independents, high-profile roles in such acclaimed efforts as Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle (1994), Devil in a Blue Dress (1995), and The Last Days of Disco (1998) proved without a doubt that the now-established actress certainly had the skills and endurance to maintain a successful screen career. Though the early years of the millennial turnover may have found Beals on shaky cinematic ground with such efforts as Jim Wynorski's Militia and the tiresomely derivative sequel Turbulence 2: Fear of Flying (both 1990), her reputation as something of an independent darling would solidify with roles in such critically acclaimed indies as The Anniversary Party (2001) and Roger Dodger (2002). Despite her divorce from Rockwell and remarriage to another man unassociated with the film business, Beals would later turn up in the Rockwell-directed comedy 13 Moons (again opposite Buscemi), while preparing for roles in such upcoming features as Runaway Jury and Break a Leg (both 2003). In 2004 Beals took a turn as a lesbian in the made-for-cable series The L Word. In her spare time Jennifer Beals is an avid photographer. Jennifer Beals is biracial, with an African-American father (deceased since she was 10) and an Irish mother. She is a graduate of Yale University.moreless

Alicia was born in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia. Her birthday is March 1st. She was the third child in a family of six; dad (David), mom (Leigh), older sister, Kimberly, older brother, Ryan, and a younger sister, Tiffany. From an early age her parents knew she was destined for a career as an actress. The entire family was working on Neil Simon's Slugger's Wife in Atlanta when the cast and crew broke for lunch. For a short moment Alicia got lost in the shuffle only to be found at the lunch table sitting in the lap of the film's star, Michael O'Keefe, and chatting away with Neil Simon. Later that year she had her first speaking role in a Bank Commercial working along side her father. More commercials and modeling jobs followed as the family became more and more involved in the acting business. Alicia also found her second passion in life around this time, soccer. Her mom was constantly taking all four children to auditions and sporting events. In 1986 the family decided to make the move out west to Los Angeles and pursue the Hollywood dream. Dad managed to find work right away but slowly Alicia and her siblings decided to concentrate on their sports and school activities rather than acting. Alicia became a very accomplished soccer player at the club level and in high school. She also developed as a powerful hitter in club volleyball. It wasn't until her junior year in high school that Alicia rediscovered her earlier love for the camera. At an open call for a Kellogg's Frosted Flakes commercial she wowed the director with her volleyball skills beating out several hundred girls for the principal role. For three years you could see her playing beach volleyball with Tony the Tiger all over the television. This led to a new agent and shortly thereafter, a recurring role as Corey Conway on the hit series 7th Heaven. In her senior year at Laguna Beach High School she was being recruited to play college soccer by several Division 1 schools. She had to make a choice. Although she loved her soccer and had been playing since the age of five she knew her future was waiting for her in Hollywood. She and her dad began studying together at South Coast Repertory Theater and she gave up her soccer career to concentrate on her acting. After graduating from high school she moved to Los Angeles and soon began guest starring in TV Sitcoms and landing small film roles. In December of 1998 NBC's Another World came to Los Angeles looking to cast the role of Alli Fowler. Alicia auditioned twice, flew to New York for a screen test, and within two weeks of the initial call was moving to the Big Apple to begin work on one of televisions oldest daytime shows. Her head was spinning as she adjusted to the demanding work schedule and to her new home in Greenwich Village. She quickly became part of the family in Bay City and fell in love with the cast and crew of Another World. She also came to love New York City and after a whirlwind six months was devastated to find the show canceled after thirty five years on the air. In spite of it's brevity, it was the most wonderful experience in her short acting career and she learned more than she could have hoped for working with such talented people in front of and behind the camera. Alicia now resides in Los Angeles and is thrilled to be part of the talented cast of ABC'S General Hospital, the show in which she began her work as Courtney Matthews, in December of 2001moreless
