The Lakes

Show Summary

The Lakes is a BBC drama created by Jimmy McGovern, an English writer who become famous for Cracker. Danny Kavanagh, played by John Simm, leaves Liverpool and starts a new life in the Lake District where he meets the local girl Emma. The first season is mainly about him, who is torn between his obsessions for gambling and sex and his will to assimilate. Things become way more difficult when a tragic accident overshadows the seemingly ideal world. The second season takes a broader perspective on the community and was criticized for not keeping the high standards of the first season. There are multiple story arcs where adultery, revenge, and wounded pride take their toll. The series starts with a 90 minutes pilot and the remaining first season episodes have a duration of 50 minutes each. In the second season the episodes have a length of 40 minutes. The Lakes is largely based on McGovern's own experiences. He also moved from Liverpool to the Lake district where he had a low paid job in a hotel and struggled with early fatherhood and gambling problems.moreless
