      • Bernie: You don't have to marry him.
Emma: I want to marry him.
Bernie: No you don't. You want to want to marry him. So there's no one left on a baby. No way for scandal. Well, I couldn't care less about scandal. All the neighbors, let them think you're the biggest slut in the world. Fine. But for God's sake, don't let them think you're stupid. Don't let them think you've done one stupid thing on top of another. Don't marry him.

      • Emma: Who made you? God made me. Why did...
        Danny: Bollocks.
Emma: ... God make you? God made me to know him, love him...
        Danny: Evolution made you.
        Emma: Explain eyesight.
        Danny: It evolved.
        Emma: How?
        Danny: I don't know.
        Emma: Exactly.
        Danny: Alright, explain piles.
        Emma: (giggles) What?
Danny: Explain piles. God made us he made piles as well, didn't he? Sitting up there on his lone - Oh I know. I'll give them these veins that swell up and pop out every time they have a crap. It's like mouth bleed. I mean which kind of sick twisted brain would think of piles?

    • NOTES (5)

      • John Simm needed medical attendance after shooting the last scenes in the lake. He reports to have turned blue due to the extreme cold.

      • As a hardcore Manchester United fan, John Simm described it as very hard to portray Danny's support for Liverpool, a team that Jimmy McGovern is a fan of. Even years later, he stated to be falsely perceived as a Liverpool fan and teased by fellow ManU supporters.

      • Since John Simm was a heavy smoker during filming, he profited from the chain-smoking habit of his character. He stated to have enjoyed it, especially since he rolled his cigarettes at that time.

      • In the DVD commentary, director David Blair states that the sexual scenes were dramatically used to define the relationships between the characters. The BBC censored some of these scenes stating they looked too much like actual sex.

      • The story introduced in this episode is in parts autobiographical for the writer Jimmy McGovern. He himself left Liverpool in his late teens, worked in a hotel in the Lake District, and had a gambling problem. He met his later wife while working there and they had three children when McGovern was in his early twenties. Also the character of Chef is based on a former coworker of him.
