  • Stan and Ollie head west to give a deed to a young girl, but are hornswaggled by a couple of crooks.

"Anyone can build a nest, but not everyone can lay an egg." In one of Stan and Ollie's most popular films, the duo perform several great musical routines, an awesome slapstick fight, and some of their funniest situations. They are brilliantly supported by Rosina Lawrence, James Finlayson, and Sharon Lynne. Vivien Oakland also briefly lends her stellar support as a woman being ogled by Ollie. The only real flaw is the same flaw that plagues so many other L&H films. The pacing is slow in places, especially the beginning. But still, seeing Stan eat Ollie's bowler certainly makes the film worthwhile.moreless

  • QUOTES (7)

    • Sheriff: There's one thing in this here town we don't allow! And that's messing with our women. Now if you want to stay healthy, you'll catch the next coach out of town.
      Ollie: Yes, sir.
Sheriff: And if you miss the next coach, you'll be riding out of here in a hearse.

    • (Ollie flirts with the sheriff's wife)
Ollie: A lot of weather we've been having lately.

    • Stan: That's the first mistake we've made since that fellow sold us the Brooklyn Bridge.
Ollie: Buying that bridge was no mistake. That's going to be worth a lot of money to us some day.

    • Lola: What did he die of?
Stan: I think he died of a Tuesday, or was it a Wednesday?

    • (Stan is having a conversation with Finn)
Stan: Her father died and left her a goldmine and we're not supposed to tell anybody but her.

    • Lola: Tell me about my dear, dear daddy! Is it true that he's dead?
Stan: We hope so, they buried him.

    • Ollie: Every cloud has a silver lining.
Stan: That's right. Any bird can build a nest but it isn't everyone that can lay an egg.

  • NOTES (2)

    • Stanley Sandford was originally cast as the sheriff, but was replaced by Stanley Fields during filming for an unknown reason. Footage and photographs of Sandford still survive.

    • This film's musical score was nominated for an Academy Award but did not win.

    • In order to flag down a stagecoach, Stan bares his leg at the driver. This is a parody of Claudette Colbert's hitchhiking scene in the 1934 film It Happened One Night.
