Would you say Lawrence Welk's band was one of the "big bands" like the Dorseys or Glen Miller? It did originate in that era. Although after World War II Welk did stop playing strictly "big band" style music, which is probably why his band survived a lot longer than the others, which didn't last much beyond the war.

I would say it was a mix, I don't know too many Big Bands that had an accordian player or some of the unusual instruments that were used on the show. I think the mix of dancing, singing and orchestral is why the show lasted so long. It was a bit of everything.

I've always considered them to be a big band type orchestra. I still catch the show most weekends on PBS. The introductory hosts have some interesting insights and stories about the cast and band members.
