At night in the castle, King Harkinian is taking a relaxing stroll around the balcony. Link groans that he ate too much for dinner and that he's still not used to living in a castle, but that he's trying to adapt as best he can. Of course, he says this as he spies Zelda reading a book in her room, 20 feet below.

Cut to the Underworld. Ganon is riding a winged unicorn, and a group of Vires accompany him on whatever foul mission he's on this time.

Back in the castle, Link hitches a grappling hook around the spire of Zelda's tower and is about to take off when the King taps him on the shoulder. Link sheepishly admits to his nefarious plan. The King says "not a chance...you'll need to take a few flowers." He pulls out a few flowers from a bush and unexpectedly sends Link on his way. Link manages to steer his way through Zelda's window, but lands on a table, breaks a few vertebrae and holds up the flowers in a painful flourish. Zelda is about to reward our clumsy, hapless, quadriplegic hero with a kiss when we hear the King scream -- Ganon and his minions are after him.

Link shakes off the paralysis and springs into action -- he throws a table onto the windowsill, a bureau onto one end of the table, and then springs off the table and back up to the other tower. Whatever they feed that guy for dinner, it's working. Ganon has the king tied up and sends the Vires after Link. Link zaps a few, but then a bunch of them grab him as Ganon escapes. Link tosses the Vires aside and grabs the unicorn's tail as it flies off. Link tries to zap Ganon but can't get a good shot and nearly takes the King's head off -- really should rethink that one, bub. Ganon zaps Link, who is about to plummet about 200 feet to his doom. Fortunately for him, the Vires are flying up after Ganon, so he grabs onto a few of them. Ganon quickly zaps the Vires, but at least Link now has to fall only about 100 feet this time. Zelda quickly wheels a barrow of hay underneath Link; the impact destroys the wheelbarrow and sends the hay everywhere. Link is lying in the hay seemingly unconscious and in spread-eagle formation. Zelda rushes over to Link's side, where he gives her the classic "dying...not going to make it...kiss me" spiel. Groan. Zelda scolds Link for letting Ganon get away, not quite appreciating the difficulty of the rescue. Zelda decides that they have to go rescue the King and wonders where Ganon found the flying unicorn.

Back in Death Mountain, we see that Ganon has captured the unicorn from someone else. He takes the King to a room standing atop a bottomless pit. The floor starts disappearing, and Ganon declares that if he doesn't receive the Triforce of Wisdom in one hour, the floor will drop out and King Harkinian will fall to...well...I guess a permanent state of falling, where he'll eventually die of boredom or something.

Link and Zelda head off to the Underworld in search of the King. They walk past a hall of Armos (statues of knights that come to life when touched). Link warns Zelda not to touch them, but Zelda unwittingly activates one. In the course of the ensuing battle they activate another two of them. One of them grabs Link, but Zelda shoots him free. The other two grab Zelda, but Link kills them and Zelda falls into his arms. Zelda is about to kiss Link, but then a trapdoor opens underneath them. Link does the whole flailing-his-legs-wildly-in-midair bit, and the two of them fall to a lower level of the dungeon, where a bunch of Stalfos materialize. This lower level has a ceiling that loks like the ribcage of some really large humanoid, with a central spine and a bunch of ribs forming the ceiling. Cool.

Link gets pummeled by a couple of the Stalfos, and Zelda can't help because she lost her bow upstairs. Out of nowhere, a ninja-like creature appears wielding a pair of laser-shooting sai. Man, Raphael would've given the shell off his back for a pair of those. The ninja zaps the Stalfos, then starts shooting at Link. Link zaps the ninja, who recoils in pain as we hear the sound that pops up whenever Link gets hit in the video game. Link then notices that it's a human, not one of Ganon's zappable and immortal magic creatures. Zelda grabs the ninja from behind, and Link pulls off the ninja's mask to reveal an Asian-looking chick. Link whistles at the ninja's beauty, and somehow Zelda represses the urge to deliver Link a royal pimp-slapping. Link gives his "we come in peace" deal, but the ninja evidently speaks some other language. Link says "oh, I'm sure we can communicate somehow...", but Zelda holds him back and decides she'll do the negotiating.

Back in the bottomless pit room, Ganon's upset that the Triforce isn't in his hands yet, and the floor has maybe a few minutes left.

Apparently Zelda has some magical ability to communicate in other languages; we learn that the ninja's name is Sing, and that she's come to Hyrule to reclaim her kidnapped flying unicorn. Click. Link pulls out a bomb and tosses it nowhere in particular; it blows a hole through which Link, Zelda and Sing escape. They find themselves on the other side of the bridge to Death Mountain.

Link fights off a pair of Lynels (sword-wielding centaur-like creatures), one of which leaves behind a whistle. Our heroes cross the rope bridge to Death Mountain, where a couple Moblins are holding the unicorn. Sing knocks them down, zaps them and reclaims the unicorn. Zelda remarks how cute it is and tries to rub the back of its neck, but the unicorn starts whinnying and kicking ferociously. Zelda decides she'd better stop agitating the equine virgin detector and find her father. At this moment, an Armos (somehow having been activated off screen) comes in carrying a bomb. Zelda knocks the bomb out of its hand with a boomerang, and it destroys the Armos and blows a hole in the floor. Of course, this floor just happens to be the ceiling of the room where Harkinian is being held.

Ganon teleports out to meet Link before he can finish crossing the bridge. Link shoots him a couple times, but instead of finishing him off, he boasts about how one more zap will finish him off. Naturally, this gives Ganon time to destroy the near end of the bridge, sending Link falling into the ravine, hanging on to the edge of the bridge. But just as Ganon is about to finish off Link, Zelda finishes him from behind with her boomerang. Zelda turns to see Link hanging off the edge of the bridge, then turns around to see her father plummet through the floor. Fortunately, Sing flies in with her unicorn and saves the king. Link gives a toot on the whistle, and a craft from Deus ex Machina airlines arrives to take them all home. Link tries to score a kiss from Zelda, but she's busy using the airsickness bag or something like that. The unicorn, however, nuzzles its nose againt Link's and asks him to scratch its back.

Ganon vows revenge and Sing flies home. That is all.

    -----------------

Interesting episode here. Apparently other countries do exist, humans get hurt instead of zapping out when hit, and so forth. They probably should have replaced the bottomless pit with a pit that ends in a lava lake or something scarier, though.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • When the King of Hyrule asks for Link's help Link says "No". While it might seem as his "no" is a response to the King's plea, Link actually means "No, you are not taking the King."

    • Just after Ganon zaps the bridge and causes a portion of it to fall, one moment Link is holding his sword in one hand while the bridge is falling, and the next he is suddenly using both hands to hold on to the rails, with the sword nowhere to be seen. Then Link is suddenly holding the sword again.
