  • Bill Bixby gives a fine dramatic performance as a goldbrick Marine private who went to high school with Bill Rice and tries to trade on it.

    9.2
Bill Bixby played a brash, immature, irresponsible young hustler. Bixby's wealthy father (Russell Thorson) insisted the young man join the Marines in the hope that it would make a man of him. Bixby went to high school with Bill Rice. Bixby tries to use his friendship with Lieutenant Rice to get out of trouble with his sergeant (John Doucette)and to generally get out of work. The contrast in the characters of Bixby and Bill Rice becomes very evident.

In an early scene at Lilly's Bar, Bixby gets Lilly (Carmen Phillips) alone in her office. He gives her a long, passionate kiss, but Lilly tells Bixby he isn't man enough for her.

Bill Bixby started "My Favorite Martian" the same season "The Lieutenant" premiered (1963-64). Bill Bixby had a much longer and more successful career as a TV star than Gary Lockwood, but both were fine actors.
