Lt. Rice returns to his home town when his father (John Beal) has a heart attack. Rice's father is editor/publisher of the local newspaper. The father thinks Rice is wasting his life as a peace time career Marine officer. Rice meets an old acquaintance (Sherry Jackson!) while he is home. Rice tells Sherry he remembers tossing the ball around with her after school when they were younger. Sherry says they did more than toss the ball around.
In the end, Rice stands up to his father. He says that as long as there is a need for the cop on the beat, there will be a need for what he does.
