The Long Arm

Show Summary

Welcome to The Long Arm guide at TV Tome.

The Long Arm is notable for being the O-10 Network's first one-hour drama series, and Australia's first all-film one-hour drama series.

Produced as an attempt to cash in on the success of Homicide and Division 4, The Long Arm was produced in-house by Melbourne's Channel O (now Channel 10) after Crawford Productions declined to produce a third police series.

Set in an (un-named) police station in Melbourne, The Long Arm appeared to be about a special unit of the Victoria Police which had discretion to investigate crimes ranging from fraud to murder. No details of their position within the police force were given.

Despite featuring a good cast (particularly Bruning, Harbutt, and Moor), and benefitting from some interesting film techniques, The Long Arm was let down by the usual combination of lack-lustre scripts and static, at times soporific, direction, along with station in-fighting over production facilities.

An episode concerning a shooting rampage by a Vietnam veteran was deemed to be too violent (due mainly to some gruesome close-ups of the victims, one of whom had been shot through the eye) was withdrawn and certain scenes re-shot.

While the series had definite potential, ratings were poor, and Channel O cancelled it after 19 episodes, managing to talk Crawfords into producing its replacement - Matlock Police.
