  • A boat ride through the jungle and an asteroid crashing to earth - just the tonic for Lord Roxton's blues.

    Book-of-the-month, Movie-of-the-week
This episode was chock-full of literary and movie references.
Obviously Heart of Darkness (and Apocalypse Now)
-the river, the warning signs, the metaphor of going deeper into one's own savage heart
-the megalomaniac at the source of the river. Like the book and the movie, the meeting of hero and pure evil is brief and ends with the villain's death
-there are references in Conrad's book about how going up the river was like being "wanderers on a prehistoric earth"- something our explorers (and Pierson Rice)have dealt with for some time.
-the theme of going mad, going 'native' In HODKurtz had 'kicked himself loose of the earth'. Veronica notes that Rice stopped looking for a way out a long time ago.
-Rice even mentions 'apocalyse' in his description of the upcoming cosmic event
    Ulysses in The Odyssey
-first the trip past the Sirens, his men with wax in their ears, Ulysses tied to the mast.
-then the (pleisosaur) sea monster -kind of like Scylla and Charbydis

    Then the movie remembrances
    -Bogie and Bacall
-"Bon voyage, you two." I swear the scene with R&M tied together sitting on a keg of dynamite, the burning line of gunpowder reminded me of the cheezy silent movie serials. Even the music sounded like the old piano music they used to play. They cut from the heroes to the burning line back to the heroes. All they needed was the villain twirling his moustache (he already had the cape) to make it complete. It was only fitting, in this context that Rice die in such a monumental manner.
-even the ending I swear was from old movie I can't quite remember, the queen's words sounded familiar

    Memories
Once again Roxton reminisces while Marguerite listens. But where in Blood Lust all the emotion comes from Marguerite's reaction, this time Mr Snow carries the scene almost singlehandedly, the emotions playing on his face (well-shot by the cameraman)

    River as Metaphor
There sure is a lot of water in Season 3. Both Marguerite and Roxton have ended up seriously submerged in 4 epiosdes so far in the season. And now Malone is a walking encyclopedia of river info. The natural order is to go downstream to the great abyss, Upstream is the source. The Indus, Mekong, Yang Tse, the Ganges in the Himilayas. And the little river in this story reminds Roxton of the Thames.

    Men with Plans
The scene where M asks John about his plans reminds me of 'Salvation' when he said they'd 'play it by ear' This time it's 'we'll find (the others)' When M reacts he adds "Our plan to to stay alive and save our friends." Their entrance to the village looked like the time Challenger blew their 'strategy' in Absolute Power -Marguerite trying to level her gun at a hundred different threats. Challenger's plan was just as vague "we'll figure something out on the way". As a Canadian, though I liked his reference to the Quiet Revolution "the three wise men" of Quebec history.

    Destiny
Some day I'm going to make a list of all the references in TLW to destiny and free will. In this one, Rice has two lines
"One must never apologise for actions taken to realize one's destiny" and later "it's the will of the universe"

    And the rest...
What's up with Malone, he's turned into a fighting fool?
Did that henchman look like a young Chevy Chase to anyone?
Isn't there a theory that some prophesied cosmic event made the Incas surrender to a few Spanish conquistadores?
They found a use for the left-over dinosaur bones trom EFAE.
I liked the touching concern when Roxton and Marguerite thought the others were 'dead and buried'.
Another "After you" moment. Didn't work well for Malone, got a gutful of riflebutt for his insolence.
