I've recently begun watching reruns of The Love Boat on Me TV. It's usually an amusing distraction, but as is unfortunately the case, I often only feel compelled to review something when it doesn't sit right with me, such as this episode.

The show starts with a group of annoyingly rowdy Texan stereotypes boarding the boat. I was relieved when it turned out the show wasn't about them, except for the fact that their presence provides Julie's cousin an excuse to don a fake mustache and stetson in a ridiculous scheme to get his "nice" fiance to ditch him for someone else. I found this story line unobjectionable, and as a fan of the Stargage franchise, it was nice to see Richard Dean Anderson displaying his considerable comedic talents.

I never heard of Shirley Hemphill before, except in an episode of Futurama when Hermes orders a drink by that name, but at the time, I assumed it was just one of that show's many allusions to the character's fondness for a certain recreational drug. In this episode, she guest stars as a nurse who Isaac keeps avoiding, seemingly because she has the hots for him, but it turns out he's afraid that if she finds out he has high blood pressure, it will cost him his job. The way the nurse aggressively flirts with him has got to be a violation of professional ethics. I guess the guy running from the horny fat lady is supposed to be funny, but just imagine how much creepier it would feel if the genders were reversed. At least by the end, Isaac doesn't actually seem all that put off by her advances, sharing a bottle of champagne with her and possibly more.

The really creepy plot involves the two former lovers who haven't seen each other in decades and now find that he is unwittingly engaged to her daughter. After much awkwardness, the two old flames finally get back together, with the daughter's blessing. This is actually pretty similar to how the charming British sitcom As Time Goes By starts, except on that show, the mother's former flame was only taking her daughter out for dinner and it takes more than a day or so for Jean and Lionel to fall back in love. I found it pretty unrealistic just how easily the older gentleman in this case switches from the daughter to her more age-appropriate mother, not to mention just how relatively quickly the daughter adjusts to the idea of her fiance hooking up with her mom. The whole situation felt uncomfortable and gross, but I would have been happier if the old guy had stayed with the daughter or if nobody had ended up with anybody. The way things turned out, it was almost like they were sending the message that people should only stick to dating someone their own age.moreless
