Lucy credits the great Danfield vocal coach Dr. Gitterman with teaching her how to sing. Played by Hans Conried, he applied his skills to Lucy in the Season 1 episode Lucy's Barbershop Quartet.
Lucy offers Agnes Schmidlapp $5 to come to her house and pretend to be Ethel Merman.
Lucy: You can drop that Schmidlapp routine.
Mooney: Oh, you know who she really is.
Lucy: Yes, I do. And thanks to you, I made a complete fool of myself.
Mooney: You can't pin that on me! I just moved to town a year ago.
Lucy: (coaching "Agnes" to sing) Haven't you ever had any singing lessons?
Ethel (as Agnes): Never!
Lucy: I believe it.
Ethel (as Agnes): Have you?
Lucy: How'd you think I learned to sing like this?
This was originally planned as a single episode, but things went so well between Lucille and Ethel it was decided to make it a two-parter. The final scene of this episode was rewritten to lead into Part Two. However, it wasn't filmed until they shot the second episode a month later.
