It is revealed in this episode that Mary's annual income the year prior was $8,000. That would have been roughly the median for women in 1970, depending on age and demographics.
Mr. Brand: I just want you to know that I'm really very happy for you.
Mary: You know, your face doesn't look happy for me.
Mr. Brand: Oh, really? That's funny. Because it's really very, very happy for you. Really. In fact, my entire body is very pleased.
Rhoda: (taking a piece of candy) I don't know why I'm putting this in my mouth. I should just apply it directly to my hips.
Edward Asner (Lou Grant) does not appear in this episode.
Paul Sand, a colleague of Valerie Harper's from Broadway, was an 11th hour replacement. The role was intended for Bob Newhart who, because of his fear of flying, could not make it for the taping. Consequently, this episode is a showcase for Paul who literally takes over the show from Mary. MTM would later give him his own show, "Paul Sand in Friends and Lovers"
