  • Phyllis leaves Bess (and several books on contemporary child-rearing) with Mary. Mary ignores the books and uses her Mary magic to bring out Bess's good side, leaving Phyllis the odd woman out.moreless

This episode is most notable not so much for its storyline, but for the "where the heck did that come from?" shopping montage of Mary and Bess. This is the only time in the series such a montage occurs and it brings to mind such 60's fare as "That Girl" or Moore's own collaboration with Elvis, 1969's "Change of Habit". The abrupt shift in tone from down-to earth sitcom to twinkly musical montage (complete with Mary and Bess playing their own version of hide-and-go-seek) may be jarring to fans of the show who had never come across this episode before. To those who saw the episode in 1970, it may not have seemed as out of the ordinary as this was only the third episode and the show was still finding its tone. Nevertheless, now that I know what to expect when I see it, I think the montage is absolutely charming and one of the numerous high points of the series.moreless
