  • Not a great installment but one that brings up a few points about friendship that aren't examined that often in situation comedies.

Rhoda loses her job and doesn't seem as concerned about it as Mary feels she should be.

There are a few contrasts that make this episode a little surreal but also show how human beings react to stress differently.

Mary and Phyllis seem upset that Rhoda watches soap operas and does her hair rather than pound the pavement looking for work after being laid off, and it's interesting to see the different attitudes emerge. A little darkness lies beneath most of the laughs. At the same time, the perfectionist Mary tries to hide a new graphic artist position open at WJM from her friend - exposing the guilt that typifies her character through the years. There's some seriousness as it is implied that Rhoda may be a "go to lunch" kind of a friend to Mary Richards.

In the long-run, there is nothing to worry about as Rhoda falls into a new department store window designing job, and that seems to be the point of it all. The writers in this installment do a decent job of illustrating a "different strokes" approach to life and the built-up resentment that it can lead to. Not a great episode but a thoughtful one.moreless

    • Mary: Why are you smiling at me?
Lou: Because you just reaffirmed my faith in human nature.
Mary: You mean what I did wasn't rotten?
Lou: Oh, no, that was rotten all right. It's just nice to know that everyone's rotten. Up to now, I thought you were one of the few holdouts.

    • Phyllis: (to Mary and Rhoda) I thought I'd see how you swingin' singles spend your evenings!
Rhoda: They're not much different than yours. We sit around at night wondering what it'd be like to have a happy marriage.
