Dan and Mary are suddenly dating again after he breaks things off with his fiancée, and Rhoda begins seeing Jonas, his clownish friend. Although Dan hits it off with Mary's parents, and Dan's parents love Mary, Mary feels as though Dan just wants to get married for the sake of being married. She tries to have a heart-to-heart with Lou about her dilemma, but his advice on settling and growing to love the other person doesn't altogether reassure her. Finally, Dan brings up the idea of marriage and Mary tells him that she needs more time. Dan declares that he's ready immediately, and wants to go their separate ways if she isn't. Mary convinces him to stay and finish the Chinese food Rhoda and Jonas gave them, and when Mary's dad comes by shortly thereafter to fix the lock he placed on her door, he casually surmises that Mary "would know best" when he learns his daughter refused Dan's proposal.
