So obviously a canned "concept" episode that it's really hard to treat it too seriously. It's almost as though they said, "Okay, let's do one of those hokey old 50's style plotlines--jobswitching or whatever--with a contemporary 70s show." Lou has some fun moments--with the booze and the silly table/desk--but mostly it plays like a sort of prank, as though the gang at MTM is putting us on a bit by taking the newsroom through this conventional situation and winking the whole way through. If only they had been a bit more blatantly tongue in cheek about it (a la Taxi), it probably would've worked better, and wouldn't have seemed quite so tired, listless and perfunctory.
