Haruhi Suzumiya is a great show with characters who grow on you from the first episode. A lot of the show is carried by the narrator, who also plays one of the main characters. His voice portrays the character's annoyance and cynical outlook perfectly, and his cynicism is nicely offset by Haruhi's craziness.
The show is mainly done as a slice-of-life type anime, but there is a plot arc in there as well, which has to do with sci-fi, aliens, a group from the future and time travel. Oh, and superpowers. But it's all taking place in an everyday high school setting. Sounds crazy, and it is - you just have to see this one.
I can't wait to see a second season of this incredible show.
I really like this show. It's so funny, and very enchanting. What I mean by enchanting is that the show's dialog, and humor will suck you into the series. This show is about Kyon, a normal high school boy who after meeting Haruhi Suzumiya, a beautiful, quiet girl who in fact is NOT an alien. She's an Earthling just like Kyon. Haruhi does not care about humans, she only cares about beings with god-like powers. After Kyon talks to Haruhi, she wacks him against her desk, and comes up with a club name. Haruhi names the club, The "SOS Brigade". Haruhi recruits Mikuru, a time traveler, Yuki, an alien magician, and Itsuki, an esper. The five of them have crazy, supernatural, and some sports adventures together. The humor in this show rocks! Most of the scenes, and jokes are hilarious! Although the overusage of the sexual innudo did kind of tick me off. I feel bad for Mikuru, because Haruhi always picks on her. I know Mikuru is really cute :), but I kind of think that Haruhi is raping Mikuru. Poor Mikuru :(. Mikuru is my favorite female character, and Kyon is my favorite male character. The dialog in this show is really good, although most of the long talking scenes kind of got boring. The music in this show is excellent! I like the ending theme, and Haruhi's singing at the arts festival. Overall, awesome show, lovable characters, hilarious humor, great dialog, excellent music. One more thing to add, I somewhat wish that this show will have a second season. It would be cool :).
It's all Haruhi who had no interest of ordinary human beings, she got interest of nonsense like time-travellers and aliens and stuff.
Ok, this is the worst anime show ever like what the heck is this?!, all people like all people like this show, yeah right. This is even worse than Negima. The plots of the show is full of nonsense like what the heck, like fighting and war against boys likewise. The voice acting is terrible even in the Japanese version, but actaually the english version was more horrible than japanese version but I like Haruhi's English voice.
I just don't like anime nowadays, all I need to do is watch nowadays is to watch anime with a genre of action.
This show is one word: crap. The show has no point and is full of nonsense. I don't get why there's so many hyper fans for this stupid anime?! There is NO character developement, whatsoever. Haruhi is the ''most'' annoying lead character I have ever seen in anime. She is stuck-up and loves kissing up to her own ass. Her voice makes my ear want to bleed everytime she comes crashing into the club's room. The narrator, Kyon (or whatever his name is) is just as dull. The only person I guess I like in this anime is Yuki Nagato... Another problem with this anime is the plot. Every episode has its own sort of thing that it doesn't matter if you miss two or more episodes, heck even HALF and you'll still get the stupid point of the show. Wait! I forgot, there is NO point to the show. There's no climax and it doesn't even give you details about Haruhi being "god" (wow, lame). The best part in the show is when it's actually quiet and when they're doing nothing. Serious, I don't get why people like this anime and if you're thinking about watching the anime, don't. It's overrated (I mean seriously overrated) and it sucks.
On the first day of school Kyon adores a beautiful girl. He get's a big surprise when she introduces herself. Haruhi demands that any alien, time traveler, or esper report to her and she doesn't want anyone else to talk to her. Eventually, we learn that she has god-like powers and everything she wished for came true!
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is an awesome show. Even though it can be slightly violent and even perverted at times, it kept me watching through the first season and I can't wait for the second. Overall, watch the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and you'll be impressed!
Apart from the Endless Eight disaster, although I can see it was to show Yuki's emotions evolve (If you think about it, it's kind of a joke since her mission is to discover how we humans have evolved as much as we have.), the anime series in my opinion is fantastic and the characters, while some of them can be sort of one sided, are some of the greatest.
I've seen people's reviews saying they have no idea why people like this, but to me, I feel it's something i can relate to. I mean back in the day during school I wanted to see the abnormal like many things like in fiction, even though I know what reality is like, so the fictional world would be my way of escaping the real world but not actully leaving.
It's a series that speaks to me, and I like the Melancholy arc as a way to get into the show, and in the next group of episodes, they do alot of other things like mystery solving, baseball, because that's how young people's lives are, they do one thing, and then move onto another and another.
When the second season came around, I was happy to see Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody, one of my favourites because I like time travel stories. The first Endless Eight episode, which I saw on my birthday, I liked it, but I felt the ending wasn't very good. Not that I was fully aware, but I had a feeling why. Once that and the Sigh story was over, the thought of wanting to watch more was gone. Until they threw the Disappearance which I couldn't ignore.
To sum up, great story, brilliant characters, fantastic artwork and truly mindblowing (Apart from Endless Eight.)
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is a crazy story about a girl with god-like powers, an alien, time-traveller, and an ESPer. Oh, and don't forget the completely normal guy. The fate of the universe hinges on their entertainment skills.
This show, first of all, is a shining example of Your Mileage May Vary; some people love this show, some don't. I think it's worth watching--after all, what's a 13 episode anime really going to do to you?
It's odd. I'll give it that. Haruhi Suzumiya is a special brand of crazy, and she may end up being endearing to you or you may find her annoying. But there are plenty of other characters to choose from; The emotionless (or so we think) alien girl named Yuki Nagato, the very moe Mikuri Asahina, who also happens to be a time-traveller, And Itsuki Koizumi, the ESPer that's a bit of a mystery. Kind of. Kyon, he's the perfectly normal, sarcastic, and in-denial narrator.
The show is crazy, the animation is beautiful and up-to-date, and all-in-all, I do believe this show is worth watching. Go ahead and try it.
The show centres on a beautiful but strange high school girl named Haruhi Suzumiya who starts a school club called Suzumiya Haruhi's Brigade. Ironically this club is set upto investigate espers, time travelers, aliens and witches and unbeknownst to Haruhi the people who join the club just happen to be espers, time travelers and aliens.
The story is both funny and heart warming with some moments of real action to keep your attention. The script is surprisingly funny eve the translation into english, and this together with the medoly of characters makes for great viewing.
The animation is straight forward but still stunning and works incredibly well with the other elements of the story.
All in all this is a must watch show and not just for anime fans.
I don't really know why the show has the word "Melancholy" in the title, as if we're supposed to feel sad for this pretty (weird) girl who's waaaaaay too into sci-fi. The title is a great title but when I first heard it, I thought it was going to be one of those really sad and dramatic anime's and I would've said, "I'm sorry Haruhi, G.T.O. is the only anime (which I consider is a drama) I'm going to sit through." I watched Haruhi online in the order it aired in Japan (another briliant idea) and it was really good. Well done Haruhi, you've proved that anime can still take cliches and make them original.
After Haruhi Suzumiya asks for any aliens, time travelers, or espers to be her friends on the first day of school, she gets just that! When Kyon, the boy that sits in front of her during home room, gives her the idea of starting a club. She drags him and a few other people into a tiny room meant for the literature club and stats the SOS Brigade, a club meant to solve unexplainable cases. Everything is normal at first, until the other members of the club tell Kyon that Suzumiya has god-like powers and can destroy the world at will!
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is one of my favorite anime. It can get confusing because some episodes are out of order but the plot is decent and the characters are memorable.
Kyon, a highschooler, finds himself swept up in the supernatural powers embedded with a classmate, Haruhi. Unbeknownst to Haruhi, she has god like powers, and ultimately what she wants seems to come true. Kyon seeks to ballance out Haruhi's unstability.
Hmmmmm. This show was faily interesting, but there are definite high and low points. First of, the cast is amazing, particularly Crispin Freeman's rendition of Kyon. Michelle Ruff and Stephanie Sheh have great supporting roles. The story is told mostly through Kyon's internal monologue. And, frankly, without the amusing and clever writing for the Kyon character and Freeman's ability to dead-pan both the dialogue and monologue, this show would be dragged down by it's low points. The plot is overly convoluted and unimaginative. Superior animation and voice overs liven up an otherwise dull story line. I was continually shocked by the duality of how bad and how good this show is - luckily, the commedic aspects kept the show treading water for me. Plot is bad; narative is great. As a summery, Haruhi has godlike powers: what she wishes for ultimately comes true. Here is the problem; 1. she doesn't know she has this power and 2. she's a total nut-job. So all the adventure and excitement come from those two premises. As a nut-job, Haruhi only wants to meet 'interesting' people, she names espers, time travelers, and aliens in particular, so, you guesed it, all three show up. It falls upon the hands of Kyon to keep all of the universe safe from Haruhi's wild and insane imagination.
When I first saw episode 00, Yuki was automatically my favorite. But now I am up to episode 6 and Itsuki has rose to my spot of favorite!!! ^_^ It probably had something to do with that dream I had last week that was ItsukixMe... Of course, I don't go overboard with my fangirlishness like some do because I am able to accept and recognize that he's a fictional character and NOT REAL!!! I know a few Sasuke fg's that could use a wake up call. Anyway, this show ia about a girl named Haruhi Suzumiya, who is completely whacky and I love her for it!!! :P She controls the SOS Brigade, which is a group of Paranormal Hunters. The group consists of Haruhi herself, Yuki Nagato, the alien who lives in the clubhouse, Kyon, the guy who sits in front of Haruhi in homeroom, whom she loves to boss around (she secretly loves him), Mikuru Asahina, the soft spoken "moe" time traveller who Kyon is secretly in love with, and Itsuki Koizumi, the "mysterious" transfer student, who is really not so mysterious and is very polite and always has a weird looking smile on his face. Itsuki's an Esper. OK, well this is a really awesome show and you should watch it!!!
While I just like some and don't like some, The Meloncholy of Haruhi Suzumiya was one that was cool, and yet, completly tasteless.
The stoyline was good, I cold tell you that; Kyon (last name uprehended) meets a girl name Haruhi and they start a club called the S.O.S. Brigade. Then, they meet up with Yuki, Mikuru, and Itzumi, and they go on with their merry adventures. Good storyline...
... but it gets worse. Turns out, Haruhi is a rip in the space time continuim, Yuki is a robot, Mikuru is a future babe, and Itzumi is an esper. Kyon? Oh, he's still a boring high school student. And, all of them has one misson; to keep Haruhi from destroying the world. NOT a good decline to a show.
Next thing becomes the title. She's not a meloncholy person, but rather, a hyperactive girl, which dosen't make sence. And, BTW, Haruhi is not the main character. Kyon is. But, I have no problem with this.
But, the one thing that keeps me watching is the music. Bokun Desho Desho, God Knows, Lost My Music, and the ever popular Hare Hare Yukai. It's pretyy catchy and it'll keep you awake.
So, yeah. I hate it, but yet, I like it. Hope it clears things up.
I was curious about this programme when I first heard about it. The person who reviewed initially described it as rubbish, but he had only watched several episode before giving up on it. The show was obviously based in some sort of school and apparently it had magic or aliens in it.
I decided to watch the first episode and I loved every minute of it. I've watched similar shows to this one, like Cardcaptor Sakura for example. This one is about a group of high school students in Japan who have formed a club called SOS Brigade who try to hunt down supernatural cases (e.g. aliens, ghosts, etc.) although they don't get many, if not any cases. However, the fun part about this is that the members of the club are supernatural creatures themselves - a possible god, a time-traveller, an alien/robot, and a person who has ESP. There is also one member who has no powers but he is the main POV of the show.
There some really great moments in the show, particularly in Episode 12. However, the problem is that all the episodes are in the wrong order and it can be annoying to figure out what the order is.
At first, the story sucks you in. But before you know it, you're watching crime.
Normally~ anime shows abuse perverts, but this one does the opposite.
I could say it in a hundred different ways, but that's it. Watching one person physically ravage another doesn't appeal to my tastes. Swordfights? Ok. Gunfights? Ok. Gore? No.
But I understand some of you are mesmerized by imagining yourselves manhandling teenage girls. That's why this show is called a science fiction; it's scientifically impossible that you'll ever get laid, so you might as well watch animated sexual abuse.
We now know that free porn on the internet just isn't enough for the truly depraved among us.
I feel in love with The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya in several ways. I love the animation for startes, and the music is to die for. God knows is a superb song for an example.
The story is actually one of the most originall i ever watched. What about a girl who is god, but doesn't know it?
This anime is very intressting in several ways, since you don't know what going to happen next, and there is going to be a second season, so the cliffhanger end was a good one, are they dating? What about the timetravler, is she needed there any more? etc etc. You should love this if you like strange and originall storys.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is a phenominal anime on the level of great science fiction series. So much so, it has take Japan by storm though it is a short anime. (There are pleanty of Manga books that will surely make up for the fandom of the series.)
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya has an eclectic cast of characters. Haruhi Suzumiya, a strange girl who can create worlds. Yuki Nagato, a mystical alien cyborg. Mikuru Asahina, a shy time-traveller who you can't help but feel sorry for when Haruhi takes advantage of her. Itsuki Koizumi, an optimistic esper (person who uses ESP). And Kyon, who the Agent Scully or Arthur Dent of the group.
Together these characters form the SOS Brigade, a club of people who are aliens, time travelers and espers or who are interested in such.
The story sequence is not in chronological order, infact if you pick up the DVDs, you may watch it in the order of the DVDs and think "That seemed to be out of order." If you check Wikipedia, there are three ways to watch the nonlinear series. You can follow it according to Kyon's Point of View (of which the series is based on), or in Haruhi's Point of View, which may follow the order of the DVDs for the most part.
Kyon, and ordinary student attends school the first day not expecting anything special. His expectations had never been so off. This anime is full of twists and turns and will cause you to make facial expressions you never knew existed.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. It's one heck of an original, and confusing show. The extremes of character personalities come quick into play in this anime, with your highly ambitious, loud, and somewhat strange female character, along with an extremely quiet, anti-social female character, and an immensely cute, shy and innocent female character. They all also happen to (coincidentally) be well "developed" on top... and don't get me wrong, the writers of the show made sure that the viewer noticed these things. The animation is amazing, it was like eye candy to me. It ran super smooth, and it's probably one of the best animated shows ive seen. The only set back I have is more of a personal opinion. I didn't find this show all that entertaining, and this was probably because the humor they used were directed more to a male crowd. The anime came off as a little wierd to me at times also. But other than that, this show is really well done, and chances are you'll probably like it a lot. This is a show that you really shouldn't miss.
It's a funny anime. I really recommend you to watch this if you like funny stuff. It's about a girl named Haruhi who believes in alien and unusual stuff. She met a boy named Kyon, who thinks Haruhi have a "problem". xD So, Haruhi made up a club called S.O.S Bridge. Nagato is a smart girl who reads books a lot and Mikuru is a girl that Haruhi picks on. Itsuki is a guy who smiles often and is polite. They all happens to have unusual powers except for Kyon. I really suggest you to watch this show if you have a sense of humor and like to watch funny stuff. =D
The mix of characters range rather greatly from Kyon, the simple human being, to Haruhi Suzumiya, a crazy little girl, to Mikuru Asahina, a small little time-traveller who remains Haruhi's pet, to Yuki Nagato, the alien with a human disguise who knows everyting except emotion, to Itsuki Koizumi, the ESPer who always is smiling. So weird.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya's episodes are broadcast in non-chronological order, meaning it will not always go to the next episode in time. You can choose to watch it either in broadcast order (known as "Kyon" order) or in chronological order ("Haruhi" order). You should choose before you watch the series.
This is a rather funny series. There are quite a few weird things that Haruhi does, such as voluntarily arrest Mikuru because of her large breasts and her lolita personality, or tie off points of her hair for each day of the week. Yes, feel free to laugh.
This personality varies greatly from Kyon, the other protagonist of the show. Despite Haruhi being the main character, nearly everything is explained from Kyon's POV. So, the audience is baffled as to who is the main character of this show. Haruhi is rather upbeat, while Kyon is a "self-described barely-above-average student", so their thoughts differ. However, in the last episode, where they escape into a new world, their relationship pulls togehter, and hoping to send them back to the real world, Kyon and Haruhi share a kiss.
Just one more character to describe. She's my fave: Yuki Nagato.
I believe she is the most interesting by far. Apart from the human disguise, she is not all human. She actually is a humanoid interferance, or, what the humans call an alien, created by the Data Thought Entity. Personality-wise, she is rather quiet and dull, and she acts as a bibliophile. She normally does not speak, but when she does, she will talk in an emotionless monotone.
To sum up, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is a rather funny show, and I'd recommend this program to anyone willing to watch a film starring Mikuru Asahina, the great fight between Ryoko vs. Yuki, and, of course, more from the SOS Brigade!
About a Teenage boy who once believed in unnatural things like time traveller but not doing so, only to see on the new day a girl asks to see time travelers, aliens etc and forms a curriculum and surprisingly, 3 members are unnatural beings.
I think the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is an interesting, cool and funny program to watch due to the events that take place in it such as battles of ideas they partake in. I'm not sure if my summary was good enough, I like the idea of an ordinary school boy meeting up with a wild kind of hyper girl who's new andinterested in almost all the things he had lost belief in and is always dragging him into new things and how it forms a special bond between them. I like the characters in it to like the time traveller Mikuru Asahina and Esper Itsuki Koizumi. It was a really great show, and I hope they make a season 2 cos they left everyone in suspense of Kyn and Haruhi's relationship with the last episode.
this is an anime about a girl who is what amounts to the god of the plain of reality in which we all live...yet she knows nothing of it. she starts a club at school that she fills with time travelers, espers, bio-android aliens, and one very frustrated boy named kyon. the funniest part of this is that the clubs reason for being is to discover strange happenings and to also locate time travlers, espers, and aliens...but as a stipulation, though the club members know eachothers identities, haruhi cannot know since, that may mean the end of humanity. its a great show full of wit and lots of zany situations that'll leave you laughing uncontrollaly.
Another Highschool anime? Yes it is it's The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya hits to American shores and it's just perfect but still has it's flaws like most anime and every anime can't be perfect. This anime came out in summer of 2007 in America and it's really great anime series.
-Another High School Anime
-Episodes are out of order makes it harder to understand
This anime is worth buying well it may lack of extra features but we don't buy it just for that. Overall this is the best anime I've ever seen since Mamotte Lollipop and Cardcaptor Sakura so buy it before it's gone.
This show is really hard to follow if you don't know what you're doing, but once you rearrange the episodes it is extremely funny and intense, I totally love Yuki and I pity Kyon for what he has to go through, I like this show because one minute it's funny and the next minute it's so complex but if you give it a chance you quickly grow to love it. All of my friends have given up on watching this show but I watched all fourteen episodes (which was way too little but anymore and I guess we'd all lose our minds) I'm still trying to learn that dance in the ending theme song, I think it's been a year since I started learning it.
You may want to watch this in the original order than in the chronological order when you first watch it. A young man who's just started high school named Kyon finds a peculiar girl at the back of his desk. She proclaims that she wants to find aliens, time travellers, and espers. Kyon, trying to understand what Haruhi is doing, joins her as she begins her quest to find such things. She begins an after-school club called the SOS Brigade. Another mysterious girl named Yuki Nagato joins her. A rather timid girl named Mikuru Asahina is grabbed and forced to join the Brigade. And then, there's Itsuki Koizumi, the transfer student. However, it's revealed that all of the members besides Kyon joined Haruhi's Brigade as a way of keeping her entertained. If she gets bored or distressed, something bad might happen in the world. Overall, it's a good anime. Unlike shows that try to use philosophy, the show uses TV tropes. Tropes are story elements that are usually used in a TV show or book. Don't let the first episode make you assume that the show's bad. I think that's it was made with "So Bad, It's Good" theme coming to mind. Since it subverts or embraces most of the things in anime that we hold dear, it's recommended for people who are used to anime to at least know most of the normal cliches. Though casual viewers can watch it. Oh, and watch out for the second series of Haruhi Suzumiya coming soon.
I watched "the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya" for the first time a few months ago at my friend's house, and i simply loved it(i watched it from episode two, of course). it kinda works with the same storyline lost does, it mixes the future with the past and the present, and it manages to turn a story that would loose the viewer's interest after "the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya VI"(because it would ruin the mistery of what the consecuences of the boredom of haruhi would be and also because that episode is as good as the show gets), into a show that you just can't stop watchinq, no matter how weird things get, it's amazing.
However, this show has three big problems, problem number one, it's too short, it has only fourteen episodes; number two, it ends in a sort of "and so life goes on" season finale and it lets you with the sensation of watching an abrupt ending; an number three, there are some little actions or behaviours that you can only understand after you see the entire season for the second time(for example, in the episode where suzumiya drags kyon and the rest of the sos brigade into a baseball championship, she doesn't want mikuru to wear a ponytail because in the last episode before he kisses her, kyon says that he likes girls with ponytails).
This show rock on. I can't wait for season 2 becuase this show deserve it 100% no doubt. Haruhi is my favorite character becuase her personality just simply amaze me. Shw want something she get want she want she just a genuis. Kyon he was the first person befriends with Haruhi he always obseve the event and sometime he talk to him self on his head. Yuki she just cool! character and a quiet one too! Asuhina well she pretty quiet but also pretty Haruhi used her alot of time if she were a slave lol. Well? that all! All i'm sasying i can't wait for seasons 2 and the dub. Do not miss this show and never underestimted the lack of episode it still great! Haruhi rule!
When I watched the "first episode" (which was Haruhi's movie), I was quite confused... the characters weren't really introduced, the characters were acting strangely, there was some weird narration, and I had no idea what was going on. About half way through, I finally realized it was a movie or something, and I was finding the narrator's comments to be quite funny. It was a good episode, but I didn't like that it was the first episode in the broadcast order. I was confused about characters who weren't introduced showing up, flashbacks to things that didn't happen occuring, etc. I would watch this show chronologically if I could go back in time, with the exception of the broadcast order's last two episodes; those two episodes should definitely be at the end for a good climax and conclusion, even though it leaves a couple of things confusing. This show was unlike any I've ever seen before... it was very funny, original, and just overall an awesome show.
I know some anime are amazing... but this one hypnotizing, it just lures you with his unexpected plot in every episode, good character desing, amazing BGM for the atmosphere... everything it has is just out of every common sci-fi & school anime, it just perfectly mixes all the materials needed to make a masterpiece.
Some people get confused with the crazy order in the episodes, but just relax, is part of the show, watching it the way it came to earth as anime just ends giving it a replay value that some animes dont have, as a tip... try to watch it with moderation, because its a short series it all can be watched in a flash, for a better experience watch one episode every one or two days...
