Grace Van Pelt
Mayor Melba Walker Shannon
(Jane has accused the mayor of taking a bribe)
Mayor: Are all CBI agents this incompetent? Have you even bothered to check her lover as a suspect?
Jane: First you say it was Jasper, now it's the lover that did it. You gonna make up your mind?
Lisbon: What lover? We understood she had no social life.
Fontano: I didn't know she did.
Mayor: Oh, well, she did, and competent police would have known that.
Lisbon: Why didn't you tell us this earlier?
Mayor: Why don't I just do your job for you!? How would that be?
Cho: Why am I a detective? Why are you a reporter?
Cho: Why are you making this documentary?
Brewster: It's a fresh perspective on law enforcement.
Cho: No, I mean, what's in it for you?
Brewster: Well, uh, scoring this exclusive is a good way to get noticed.
Cho: So you're ambitious. How long have you been doing the news here?
Brewster: About eight years.
Brewster: Mostly field work.
Cho: So you're ambitious, but you haven't gotten very far.
Brewster: I, uh, I guess that's about it, yeah. You don't like being asked questions, do you? The team as a whole seems to have a problem with that.
Cho: Is that a question?
TV Reporter: Why do you so dislike being filmed?
Jane: Uh...'cause you're stealing my soul.
(Jane has just snapped at the TV reporter)
Lisbon: I know it hasn't been the most pleasant experience having a camera crew here, but you gotta cooperate. Deputy A.G.'s orders.
Lisbon: So what's the deal? I would think out of everybody, you'd be the most comfortable with the cameras.
Jane: Mm...last time I was in front of a camera, things, uh, didn't turn out so well.
Lisbon: (pauses) Oh, God, Jane, I'm sorry.
Jane: You don't need to be sorry, and you're right. There's no reason not to be civil. I'm going to apologize.
Jane: Wow. I'm impressed. How the hell did you find me out here?
Lisbon: Right, because we're lost without you?
Jane: Well, I wouldn't say that, but I'm still impressed.
Jane: Please don't say you kidnapped me for ransom, because I doubt you'll get $50, let alone save the whales.
(To Jasper, after he's been kidnapped)
Jane: So you kidnapped me to proclaim your innocence. Have you ever heard of a phone?
Jane: The message the aide brought in made her nervous, so I took it.
Lisbon: You're stealing now?
Jane: Well, let's just call it purloining.
Lisbon: I swear, sometimes I think you need medication. It's like you've got A.D.D. or something.
(Jane is on his knees leaning over a dead body)
Chief Donner: Is he sniffing her?
Chief Donner: You pay him to sniff people?
Jane: (About the dead girl) She's been smoking. The nicotine patch on her arm says she was trying to quit, so under a stress of late.
Chief Donner: Well, case closed. Stress got a knife and stabbed her to death.
Jane: He's on a roll. (To Chief Donner) You're on a roll.
Melba: (after being interrogated) Wilson! ...these people will be leaving now.
Jane: Oh, I like the way you said that, Melba-like-the-toast, so tough and commanding but let me tell you something. We are state law enforcement and we leave when we wanna leave.
Lisbon: Thank you for your time.
Jane: She wants to leave.
(Lisbon is being interviewed)
Journalist: Tell me about your weekends.
Lisbon: You wanna know what I do on my weekends?
Lisbon: Why do you want to know that? I mean, I have no problem having a life, if that's what you mean. I don't know why anybody would say otherwise-- if they do say otherwise. Um, I'm sorry. What were we talking about?
Lisbon: You guys look into this Jasper character.
Jane: Don't bother. He's a red herring.
Van Pelt: What does that mean anyway? A red herring?
Lisbon: A "red herring" is what you look into regardless of what Jane tells you.
(A pair of TV journalists is doing a piece on Lisbon's CBI team.)
Mike Brewster: And how do the local cops feel about your team coming in?
Lisbon: We get along extremely well with our local partners in law enforcement, yeah. (A flashback is shown in which Lisbon, Patrick Jane and one of the "local partners in law enforcement" are decidedly not getting along well.)
Chief Donner: My people could handle this, no problem. California Bureau of Interference is what you are.
Jane: Interference? That's witty.
Lisbon: Stay out of this. I'm sure your people are competent, Chief Donner. We're simply following the A.G.'s orders.
Chief Donner: Screw the A.G. This case is going to be in the news and you people are spotlight hogs, that's all.
Lisbon: I assure you, chief, that's--
Jane: (cutting her off) Don't waste your time. His anger runs deeper than you can reach.
Lisbon: (to Jane) Seriously, don't start trouble here. It's the last thing we need.
Rigsby: Guys. I have something to say.
Van Pelt: We have something to say.
Rigsby: Life's too short for dishonesty. Van Pe... Grace and I are lovers.
Lisbon: No, you're not.
Van Pelt: Ahm...yes, we are.
Lisbon: No. You are not lovers.
Rigsby: But, we are, though.
Lisbon: No, you are not. Because a sexual relationship between two fellow bureau employees is strictly against the rules.
Van Pelt: Which is why we kept it a secret.
Rigsby: But we don't wanna live a lie anymore. Come what may. (Jane starts laughing)
Grace: Trying to hide the truth chips away at your spirit.
