  • Going nowhere: linear story and bored actors

    4.0
This episode is going nowhere. It doesn't provide any clues about the Red John ark. Detective LaRoche is going very unpleasant, if not suspect. He's digging into team members' past as to protect himself.

The case seems clear about fight fixing since the very beginning. The trick Jane uses is so obvious I'm surprised it worked.

Another missing key element is fun: the whole episode is pretty linear and goes boring. There's no peps, no out-of-the-box surprise, no distanciated humour, no true actor performance. This is a sharp contrast with previous episodes.

I'm surprised how close "Lie to me" and "The Mentalist" are going. Both share same cases and same loss of energy. Maybe it's time to put an end to those series. Now, I'm sure fans would rate my review negatively. Instead, may I suggest them to try and encourage writers to find out new ideas for a better show?moreless

I am a huge Mixed Martial Arts fan so I was excited when I saw the previews for The Mentalist having an MMA episode, but they didn't even have any actual fighters appear on the show? Lame.

This was a decent enough episode, but it really got away from the fighting part pretty quickly and really made MMA look bad, which I am not surprised that a show targeted for older viewers would do.

The murderer was a bit of a surprise, but this felt more like Criminal Minds than The Mentalist. No Patrick Janeisms, nothing unique about this episode is the point I am trying to get across. Good, but not The Mentalist at all.moreless

  • QUOTES (6)

    • Jane: (to Merriman) Either you're a genius manipulator concealing your complicity in the case, or you're... a dimly lit clown. Which is it?

    • Floyd Benton: Ah. Police officer.

      Jane: How'd you know?

Floyd Benton: Police and fine women always think they have a right to be wherever they're at, and you ain't no fine woman.

    • Jane: Your fighter looks bigger and stronger. Shouldn't he be winning?

Floyd Benton: He's slower and dumber.

    • Beatriz: We've been together since I'm 13, married since 17, 4 kids. You think I don't know what's going on? He's a professional athlete. I blame it on the women. Men don't know any better.

      Manny: Baby, I never--

Beatriz: And you know what? Manny's good. He doesn't go all crazy, but we do have the nurse at the physio clinic, the two waitresses in Vegas, the girl at Len's club...

    • Lisbon: You gotta feel for the guy. He lost his livelihood.

Jane: Meh. Lost a life of getting hit in the head, but he got his marriage back. Seems like a fair trade to me.

      Lisbon: Aren't you the romantic.

Jane: Makes the world go round.

    • Lisbon: LaRoche. You're supposed to inform me when you talk to one of my people.

LaRoche: That's not a right. That's a courtesy we extend on occasion.

Lisbon: Well, in the future, I'd like you to extend that courtesy to me.

  • ALLUSIONS (1)

    • Jane: These aren't the droids you're looking for.

This quote is from Star Wars. Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker, R2D2 and C3PO came from Luke's uncle Owen's waterfarm, to Mos Eisley in quest of a spaceship in order to rescue Princess Leïa from Vador's hands. Stormtroopers verifying travelers' IDs stopped them, and Obi-Wan used those words as part of a Jedi mind trick to get them past.
