      • News Item: August 24, 1969

Once known as the perfect butler in films, Arthur Treacher now serves at the side of Merv Griffin. He is the announcer-sidekick and sometime cataIyst on "The Merv Griffin Show," the five nights a week talk-variety series in color on the CBS television network.

The story of Treacher's transition from movie butler to television personality began some eight years ago when Griffin and his future aide-de-camp first met. "I was filling in for Jack Paar on his late night show," recalls Griffin, "when one evening Arthur came on as a guest. I had never met him before, but our interview was a howl, and the audience took to him immediately. "During a break for a commercial I leaned over to Arthur and said: 'If I ever get a show like this I want you as my sidekick.' Arthur smiled back and replied, 'You're a dear man." That was the end of it for four years. One delightful chat, a casual comment and retort. Griffin went his way, and Treacher his.

"When I signed the deal for my syndicated talk-variety series," continues Gnffin, "I immediately stated that I wanted Arthur as the sidekick and announcer I absolutely insisted on it. When Arthur's agent called to tell him he had been offered a rather different sort of job, Treacher knew before being told that it was for my show. And he accepted on the spot. No one was certain how Treacher would fit into such a program format but Treacher's candor and dry humor quickly won audiences, and the onetime butler who made nearly 100 films and appeared prominently on Broadway said after six months at his newest job that it is the most enjoyable work he has ever done.
