  • There's a great Brick plot and wonderful Axl subplot, but the real magic happens once they intersect.

What a hilarious way for Mike to teach Axl a life lesson. Axl learns that surface beauty can only take a girl so far before her lack of intelligence takes it toll on his sanity. Mike hilariously helps him to come to realization by trying to be overheard saying that with Frankie he got the whole package, looks and smarts. Even though Mike was partially just trying to earn bonus points with his wife, it is nice to see the parents acknowledge that they appreciate each other since they have to go through such trials with their wacky (yet adorable and lovable) set of kids.

The actual telling of the birthday story was also enjoyable. The subtle differences in the weather and the running someone's-knocking-at-the-door jokes were charmingly were perfect, and on any other show they might have fallen flat. But that's what makes The Middle so great!moreless
