  • Clever, but was it funny?

I freely admit that I watched this episode purely for Tim Olyphant as the Sk8er Man, Graham Logan. I've only intermittently seen previous episodes of The Mindy Project, and truthfully on this showing I doubt I will watch again unless they have a guest star I enjoy watching.

The good stuff, sharp script, great guest star (okay I am a little biased, but Tim is a great comedy guest star). The performances are strong and the pace is good.

The not so good stuff. Mindy is an acerbic character. She has "standards", however the standards of her behaviour to others and the standards of her co-workers fall far short of the sort of compassion I would expect to see from members of the so-called Caring profession. Mindy turns the idea of a date with Graham down flat and walks away. Then discovers that all her 'friends' think that she's too picky, so she goes out to find Graham (in all the "loseriest" places) so that she can prove how not picky she is to friends. It is quite literally all about her. Graham is the 'loser' she picks up to make herself feel better about her 'standards'.

Her co-workers are equally unhappy and incapable of seeing that maybe some of their problems stem from their own behaviours. For instance Peter is clearly happiest when bullying Jeremy, and takes his act on the road when he invites himself to dinner when Jeremy's father comes to town. He humiliates Jeremy in front of his father, in the office and at the dinner table, and then when Peter and Jeremy's father dump Jeremy to go out gambling. Danny complains that the single girl he met at the dinner party is 'white-noise' to him, which apparently is no barrier to him using her on a date to get back at Mindy. He didn't display one scrap of understanding or compassion toward his date. Yet apparently, Danny and Mindy and their colleagues are judged as 'winners'.

There was one glorious second where I thought that Graham was going to make Mindy work for a date after she was rude and dismissive towards him. Thought it was also very revealing that Mindy's phone had 8 years of photos, and her selfies were the thing uppermost in her mind.

Mindy is rude, hostile, filled with her own self-importance, so perhaps she and Danny are a perfect match.moreless

Timothy Olyphant was good during his guest appearances on The League and The Office, and he continued that trend here on The Mindy Project. Good character, and it brought out the best of Mindy's character. Danny had some good lines throughout as well.

We also got a sense of what the Peter character brings to the table, and while it is a little bit too similar to Ed Helms on The Office, it is still a welcome addition this season.moreless
