  • A life of prayer isn't for everyone, as a group of men find out when they decide to try out the monastic way.

Peace, manual labor and contemplation-- they're harder than they look.

In a series similar to "God or the Girl," TLC takes a look at what happens when a group of men enter a monastery for an exploratory stay. In a Catholic facility in the southwest desert, five people agree to undergo the introduction to the Benedictine way of life. They have to follow rules written centuries ago: attend church services eight times a day, read and pray on your own as well, do physical chores all over the grounds and above all, listen to your superiors' orders. This last really grates in the maw of some of the applicants. Alex, a Marine veteran, in particular doesn't seem to be able to take the strict lifestyle. He walks out; the others strive to stay there.

Stirring, insightful and very different, this series is a breath of fresh air. It provides an honest look at a pattern of living many have heard of, but few truly understand. Like the entrants, the viewer will be different by journey's end.moreless

I have only watched this show twice, but I am hooked!!...will be tuned in to see if any of the five men are transformed from this intense experience.

The monastic day is divided into measured portions of -- time for work, time for sleep, and time for prayers - 5 hours of prayer daily. Commitment from the diverse five men is clearly necessary in this austere community. The men are quite challenged daily and are required to reflect on their personal motivations for signing up for such a rigorous practice. I do like and appreciate some of the reactions from the new comers. I will be curious to find out if the 30 monks will also exhibit obvious illumination after this switch in the community dynamicsmoreless
  • Cross-denominational studies?
I found it interesting that the monastery would bring in a resident who is studying for the Episcopal priesthood. Not that it's so...
