Peace, manual labor and contemplation-- they're harder than they look.
In a series similar to "God or the Girl," TLC takes a look at what happens when a group of men enter a monastery for an exploratory stay. In a Catholic facility in the southwest desert, five people agree to undergo the introduction to the Benedictine way of life. They have to follow rules written centuries ago: attend church services eight times a day, read and pray on your own as well, do physical chores all over the grounds and above all, listen to your superiors' orders. This last really grates in the maw of some of the applicants. Alex, a Marine veteran, in particular doesn't seem to be able to take the strict lifestyle. He walks out; the others strive to stay there.
Stirring, insightful and very different, this series is a breath of fresh air. It provides an honest look at a pattern of living many have heard of, but few truly understand. Like the entrants, the viewer will be different by journey's end.
