Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • Strange how Lily and Herman think Grandpa is suffocating in the trunk when he always sleeps in a coffin.

    • This is a holiday episode, and not only because it aired on Christmas Eve. In the middle of the episode, Lily says, "Poor Grandpa. He won't be with us for the holidays." The tone of the episode is family togetherness, a Christmassy aspect. The last scene has the most to do with the holidays; the background music has jingle bells and the family places presents on the table. Grandpa says, "It sure is wonderful to be back with my family, especially at this time of the year. And now it's time for my favorite holiday dish: plum pudding soaked in brandy sauce," which he lights with his thumb.

  • QUOTES (2)

    • Lily: The last time we had a family spat, Grandpa turned himself into a frog and lived under the porch for a while.
Herman: Yes, and I've never seen him happier. He could croak every night.

    • Eddie: Hey Mom, Dad! I found Grandpa in this newspaper!
Lily: Oh, not in the obituaries again!

  • NOTES (1)

    • In the beginning, Herman is reading Edgar Allan Poe's "The Murders in the Rue Morgue". The raven in the clock also says, "Never more," obviously in reference to Poe's most famous poem, "The Raven".
