The hard-living singer played by Sharon Farrell is clearly based on the real-life singer Janis Joplin, then at the height of her fame. Reportedly, Joplin herself was approached to play the role, but the producers eventually decided against it. (Joplin's self-destructive lifestyle was well-known, like her unpredictable behavior and sometimes aggressive manner; a year and eight days after this episode was first aired, she died of a heroin overdose, aged only 27.)
This episode was the most highly acclaimed episode of The Name of the Game.
