The Name of the Game

Season 2 Episode 2

A Hard Case of the Blues

Aired Friday 8:30 PM Sep 26, 1969 on NBC

  • Trivia

    • Percy Rodrigues - whose surname is correctly spelled on the credits  and not as "Rodriguez", as it so often was - makes the first of his series appearances as Dan Farrell's police friend Paul Reston in this episode. He was also seen in "The Battle At Gannon's Bridge" in Season Three.

    • The hard-living singer played by Sharon Farrell is clearly based on the real-life singer Janis Joplin, then at the height of her fame. Reportedly, Joplin herself was approached to play the role, but the producers eventually decided against it. (Joplin's self-destructive lifestyle was well-known, like her unpredictable behavior and sometimes aggressive manner; a year and eight days after this episode was first aired, she died of a heroin overdose, aged only 27.)

Jessie Boone: [sarcastically]: Miss Boone can't speak to you right now.
Dan Farrell: [to Polk]: Very good.Your lips didn't move at all.

    • Jessie Boone: Marvin was sort of an uptight cat. I mean, he got hung up if anyone disagreed with him.

    • Jessie Boone: [to Winston Polk]: Oh, you're really smart. How come you're not smart enough to get me out of this, huh?
