  • The politics of sacrifice.

A rather broken-backed episode, but its finest moments are very powerful. A group of unhappy, damaged people may commit mass-suicide at the deserted Nevada testing-site for a new biological-warfare weapon if Glenn Howard and his assistant Andy Hill can't prevent the test occurring; and the problem is exacerbated by the fact that Glenn is the group's prisoner and that Andy doesn't know this. It might have been more effective if we'd stayed with the group in their claustrophobic test-site office; instead, the script gets two parallel stories going by having Andy consult an eccentric Las Vegas private eye in his efforts to find Glenn. Keenan Wynn gives an amusing performance as the sleuth, but the shift in tone is damaging, and the vital timeline of the story gets very confused; there's less urgency than there should be, and, logically, the Las Vegas plotline ought to spread out over a greater period of time. The script also cops out by making the group's leader (Jordan Christopher) a domineering Jim Jones-style megalomaniac instead of an idealist. Henry Jones, Tisha Sterling and Bo Svenson are, however, just fine as his doubting acolytes.
