  • Quotes

    • Maxwell: Miss Fine this is not exciting it's appalling! She's just a child!
      Maggie: No I'm not!
      Fran: She's not, you know.
C.C.: I think I'm starting to feel better.
Maggie: Dad I'm fourteen years old!
Fran: You know when I was fourteen.. (Maxwell glares) Oh, maybe this isn't the right time...

    • Sylvia: Want another Mallomar?
Fran: Ma, food's not the answer to everything!
Sylvia: Meanwhile your father and I have based our entire relationship around food. Passion goes, sex goes, communication we never had, But food is forever.
      Fran: Okay. (Takes one)
Sylvia: Morty? You want another Mallomar?

    • Fran: That is so sweet! Couldn't you just drop dead?
      C.C.: I don't know. Could you?

    • Grace: Daddy, like my party dress? Loehmann's, 70% off!
Fran: She'll never shop retail again!

    • Maggie: Dad's going to hate this.
Grace: C.C.'s going to totally freak.
Brighton: Sounds like a party to me!

    • Fran: Gracie how're you doing?
Grace: I'm feeling empty and alone.
      Fran: Want a Tic Tac?
      Grace: Okay!

    • Fran: Oh thank you, Mr. Sheffield! You won't regret this!
Maxwell: I'm pretty sure I will.

    • Brighton: Come on, Gracie. Let's go upstairs while Father hires someone else to take care of us problem children.
Fran: Well you're a bitter little person aren't you? We're gonna get along great!

    • Niles: May I present your resume to Mr. Sheffield?
Fran: Oh, my resume. Why don't you get this Mr. Sheffield and I'll do the resume presenting myself?
Niles: As you wish. (To himself) This oughta be good.

    • Maxwell: May I see your resume, please?
      Fran: Oh, sure.
(Fran hands Maxwell the resume; Maxwell rubs something off his fingers)
      Maxwell: Crayon?
      Fran: Lipstick.
Maxwell: Ah, of course. And what a lovely shade.
(Fran laughs her trademark nasal laugh)

    • Fran: Oh, please! I come from Flushing. There is nothing these kids can throw at me that I haven't seen before. Except maybe their trust funds.

    • Niles: Miss Babcock for you, sir.
Maxwell: Thank you Niles, I'll take her in the library.
Niles: Miss Babcock loves to be taken in the library.

    • Brighton: I hate her.
Maxwell: No Brighton, let's not be hasty.
Fran: Yeah, I haven't even sung 'Climb Ev'ry Mountain' yet.

    • (Fran walks down stairs wearing red sparkly dress)
      C.C.: Who is that?
      Maxwell: That's the nanny.
Fran: You like? I borrowed from my cousin, Miss Long Island 1989.
      Niles: A very good year!

    • Fran: (points to Maggie) This one's got no personality, (points to Gracie) this one's got multiple personalities and Brighton... Where's Brighton?
Brighton: (pokes head out from under a female mannequin) Are these dummies anatomically correct?

    • Grace: (referring to her previous psychiatrist appointment) She took me back through my childhood.
Fran: Wow, must have been a quick trip.
Grace: Oh you have no idea how complicated my life is.

    • Fran: Hey, be nicer to your sister.
Brighton: Why, because we're a family?
Fran: Yes, that's right, and someday your father's gonna be old and sick, you're gonna want him to live with her.

    • Fran: Oh! The nanny gets to live here?
      Niles: Is that a problem?
Fran: Oh, yeah, I'm sure I'm gonna miss being 29 and still living at home with my parents, but, if it's best for the kids...
      Niles: Twenty-nine...
Fran: Don't start with me, Niles.

    • Brighton: Maggie doesn't date.
      Fran: Never?
Maggie: The boys haven't noticed me yet.
Brighton: Oh, they've noticed, Maggie and... that's why you don't date!

    • (Fran sees no available chairs at the breakfast table)
      Fran: Oh...where do I sit?
Niles: The previous nanny sat in the kitchen.
      Fran: Oh, how antisocial!

    • Maxwell: Miss Fine, you seem to have listed the Queen Mother as a reference.
Fran: What? Let me see that. Oh, no, that's not the Queen Mother. That's my mother from Queens!

  • Notes

    • Jonathan Penner (Danny) would later compete on "Survivor: Cook Islands," the thirteenth season of the hit CBS reality show. In addition, he would also compete in multiple other seasons.

    • The Nanny Named Fran is the song that opens every episode. It was composed and performed by Ann Hampton Callaway.

    • The set used for the house is the exact same as the one in the 1994 show Sister, Sister.

    • Val originally had speaking parts in the bridal scene in the beginning, but they were cut out for the final version.

    • In the original script, Danny didn't dump Fran for Heather Biblow, but for Val; C.C. was a divorcee; the family name was Shurfeld instead of Sheffield; there was a chauffeur named Edmond, and Mr. Sheffield had only two children, Brighton and Grace. Maggie was added later.

    • Fran was fired by Danny and he gave her job to Heather Biblow. But in the opening animation, we see Danny placing a "help wanted" sign in the window.

    • In the pilot we see that the staircase and the front door are located on the left side of the house. We can also see two offices. After the pilot was picked up by CBS, they re-made the house, changing the stairs and the door to the right. The two offices were only one. We see two because the office was also changed and the first scene was re-shot. Later, CBS kept the new one.

    • The idea for the show was inspired on Fran Drescher's real life experiences as the nanny for english model Twiggy's children.

    • The show's pilot cost only US$25,000.

  • Allusions

    • Brighton calls Grace "Sybil," a reference to Shirley Mason whose life was chronicled under the name Sybil Dorsett. Shirley Mason is one of the most popular cases of Multiple Personality Disorders later named Dissociative Identity Disorder.

    • Fran mentions that she hasn't sung "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" yet, a reference to the song Mother Abbess sang in The Sound Of Music.
