  • This is just another classic episode of The Nanny! Chaos erupts when Fran meets Maxwell's mother for the first time...

    9.2
Like most other episodes, the unique characters never failed to make me laugh. Fran argues with a woman at a flower shop over a bouquet of tulips, and locks her in a room. Much to her dismay, she runs into the woman again at the mansion, where she discovers that she is actually Maxwell's mother, Elizabeth. Elizabeth naturally wants to fire Fran, and Maxwell refuses. He disobeys his tyrant mother, and rebels by asking Fran to marry him. Although Fran goes overboard by making plans, she realizes that Maxwell only proposed to her to anger his mother. This will mark the beginning of the many things Maxwell will do that will be thrown back in his face for many episodes to come.

The writing is absolutely fabulous, including many zingers and one-liners guaranteed to make you laugh. This episode never moves at a slow pace, and is thoroughly entertaining from start to finish.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • Fran tells Mr. Sheffield's mother that she has been living with him for three years, but she has actually only been living there for two.

    • Watch closely: right in the beginning of the episode when Fran goes to the kitchen to pick Mrs. Sheffield gift, she turns right, but the kitchen is on the left! There's nothing on the right, only the backstage.

  • QUOTES (18)

    • Fran: Look at this! 'Hello Dolly' spelled out in spaghetti-O's! I swear it fell out of the can that way!

    • Elizabeth: Go on, Maxwell. Tell her how much you detest me.
Maxwell: I don't detest you, Mother. I don't know you well enough.

    • Elizabeth: You don't raise a child for four years before boarding school and come away with nothing.
Maxwell: Oh, that was you for those four years? I thought it was Niles disguised as Kim Novak!

    • Maxwell: Miss Fine, please! We're in your mother's house!
Fran: Well, the couch has protection!

    • Fran: You can return this. It's what I was going to wear on our honeymoon night.
Maxwell: Nothing in here but lip gloss.
      Fran: Suffer.

    • Elizabeth: (Inspecting his uniform) Niles! Where are your tails?
C.C.: He had them cropped when they did his ears.

    • Maxwell: Oh, mother, as much as I'd love to stay and chat, I'm afraid I have a meeting with uh...
      Niles: Ethel Merman.
Maxwell: Yes, and I may be awhile... (Leans over to Niles and mutters through his teeth) because she's dead!
Niles: Then I'd better go cancel, sir.

    • C.C.: Oh, Elizabeth, I can't wait to tell you all the exciting things that going on in my life.
Elizabeth: Right after I visit the powder room, dear.
Niles: Oh, please... she'll be done before you get there.

    • C.C.: Maxwell, your adversarial relationship with your mother is your own fault. I find I catch more flies with honey.
Niles: I always thought your tongue darted out.

    • Fran: Anyway, I think it's gorgeous; if she doesn't like it, tough, I'm not changing again.
Maxwell: Oh, Miss Fine, is that what you're wearing?
      Fran: Hell, no!

    • Elizabeth: Maxwell, if you pursue this... that... that, I will have no choice but to disinherit you.
Maxwell: Well, I don't need your money, Mother, or your approval. And I'll do whatever the bloody hell I like.
Fran: Oh, don't talk to your mother like that.
Maxwell: Miss Fine? Will you marry me?
      (Fran gasps)
Elizabeth: What?! Are you out of your...
Fran: Oh, let him get a word in edgewise, lady.
Elizabeth: Maxwell, stop making a spectacle of yourself.
Maxwell: Oh. Oh, did you think that was a spectacle? Oh, no, Mother. This is! (Holds and kisses Fran)

    • (Gracie comes in the room, dressed looking like Fran)
Gracie: Daddy, look at me. Who am I? (Imitating Fran) Eh heeeeeeeh!
Maxwell: That's very nice, sweetheart. Now go change.
Gracie: I can't. I'm playing doctor. (Imitating Fran) Oh! Ha! You married? Eh heeeeeeeeeeeh!

    • Fran: Oh Mr. Sheffield! You wanna play that game? OK! You're the boss and I'm the nanny, you give me a raise and I'll give you one!

    • Fran: Val, I can't marry someone under false pretences!
Val: You can't? Gee! You think you know a person...

    • Maxwell: (Explaining to Niles why he believes Fran has a crush on him) Oh, come on man. Wouldn't you?
Niles: Yes, well, you've always been the sunshine in my life.

    • Elizabeth: Maxwell, do do up your shirt, I can't distinguish you from the servants.
Maxwell: Oh, that's easy. I'm the one who's actually working.
Fran: Ahahaha. Oh, that's a good one. I can't wait to tell Niles when he comes back from the track.

    • (Talking about Maxwell's mother)
Niles: Shall I poison them at supper, sir?
Maxwell: Niles! It's two hours away...

    • (Maxwell's Mother wants the tulips Fran's holding)
Maxwell's Mother: I had my eye on those.
Fran: Well, I had my eye on Antonio Banderas but I ain't taking him home either.

  • NOTES (2)

    • At the flower shop, when Fran compares the royal family wedding picture's to Mama's Family, it's an inside joke, reffering to director Dorothy Lyman, who starred in that show as Naomi Harper, the Mama's daughter-in-law.

    • This is the first episode with closed captions.
