Episode Summary

Functional Electrical Stimulation
The spinal cord connects the brain the body. If damaged or broken, it often cuts off messages from and to the brain. However, most of the nerves below the spinal injury are still active, along with muscles and other organs. By tapping into those nerves it's possible to restore some of the original function, even many years after an injury. Today a number of facilities are developing FES, or Functional Electrical Stimulation technology.Using surface electrical stimulation technology some people with paralysis can stand, and some quadriplegics can use their hands.moreless
