The New WKRP in Cincinnati was an idea that might have sounded good on paper but in execution it proved that it's tough to re-create a classic. Part of the problem here was that only three members of the original cast returned: Gordon Jump, Richard Sanders, and Frank Bonner. Their characters were probably the three biggest flakes on the show. What the New WKRP needed was Gary Sandy. If he'd been brought back into the fold this second verions of Cincinnati's wackiest radio station might have lasted at least as long as the original.

Mykelti Williamson, who would later co-star in Forrest Gump, was cast as the Sandy type character but he never really fit. Neither did any of the other new supporting actors such as Michael Des Barres, Tawny Kitaen, Kathleen Garrett, or French Stewart. None of them could hold a candle to the original ensemble actors who occasionally made appearances on the show but whose presence was not enough to save things. The New WKRP went off the air after two seasons and nobody really missed it. Let's just hope that someone doesn't try to bring back the show again with something entitled WKRP in Cincinnati 2005.moreless
