While the pilot of this show was highly entertaining and continuing episodes also offer enjoyment, there has been some dark and vicious characters introduced in some stories which don't exist in the original novels. While it makes sense for tv purposes not to follow the novels too closely (ie making JLB a depression victim early in the series does not make good television and delaying the marriage of JLB and Precious on the other hand makes better television), the light-hearted approach of the novels would be the reason most people would watch this show.
In this episode, Precious solves the case of the missing boyfriend - but incurs the wrath of the new detective in town who threatens her personally at the end of the episode. Mma Makutsi solves the beauty pageant problem at the same time. Both these stories have some sort of connection with the novels but both endings are changed for tv purposes. One of the better scenes has an upset Precious driving in the night looking for JLB and they meet on a lonely road - and they decide to get married. This was a good scene for the show and the 2 characters.moreless

    • Cephas Buthelezi: There's room for both of us in Gabarone, Mma, the city is growing. You can carry on with your bits and pieces while I take care of matters that require a man's approach. A professional detective's approach. Mma Makutsi: We are professionals. Cephas Buthelezi: I meant qualified, experienced, professional.
    • Mma Ramotswe: Have you heard the expression 'never judge a book by its cover'? Mma Makutsi: Mmm, luckily, that does not apply to pretty girls.
    • JLB Matekoni: If a man has no wife, if a man has no chance of a wife? If the woman a man wants for his wife will not look at him twice, then what? Old Angler: Then the river is a fine companion.
